Brief Description of Job:
Perform routine library work, and assist patrons in locating materials and answering reference questions, assist with preparation of materials for programs and other tasks as required by the Librarian to facilitate smooth department operations. Scheduled to work approximately 40 hours per week, subject to change due to changing needs at the Library and to facilitate smooth operations of the Library facility, at the determination of the Librarian and the City Manager. May be required to work additional hours as needs of the Library dictate; will require working one evening until closing and on Saturday. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Work in all areas of the Library, at the front desk to check books and materials in and out; wait on patrons; answer questions; find books or materials requested; accept applications for new cards; renew cards; levy fines and take money; reserve books; obtain information for customers or refer to appropriate staff. Pick up books from book drops; load and unload carts and dumbwaiter. Carry small numbers of books where ever needed, including up and down two flights of stairs-to and from the children's area and in any area on the main floor; placing any library material or inventory in the appropriate place, including shelving. To enter and exit and to work in the confined and small area of the down stairs children's reading nook. Perform variety of miscellaneous duties including stock copy paper and other supplies; answer phone; enter data on computer; file; stamp due dates; work on special projects such as displays, etc; assist with preparation of materials for programs. Assist in special projects as designated by the Librarian. Other duties as assigned
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Standing:
To work at the main desk; several hours at a time.
Sitting:
To enter computer data; alternating with walking and standing.
Lifting/carrying:
Frequent:
Books 10 to 15 pounds; occasional: boxes of donated books (etc) unknown weight; printer paper or card stock weighing 15-18 pounds.
Pushing/Pulling:
Push/pull carts of books up to 30 lbs. of exertion.
Handling:
Most aspects of the work require frequent handling of books and papers. - Library Aide Page 2
Reaching:
Constant to work at desk; overhead and arms length forward reach: reaching overhead to shelve or retrieve books from shelves; reaching forward and overhead to post notices on bulletin board or displays.
Vision:
Required for most aspects of the job.
Walking:
On carpet; frequent walking from shelving areas to front desk - 50 feet.
Fine Dexterity:
To use computer; load printer and copier with paper; do paperwork.
Hearing/Talking:
To communicate with the general public and co-workers; answer telephone.
Bending:
At the desk to reach items on the side or in front of computer, etc.; to shelve books and periodicals, materials and supplies on lower shelves.
Climbing/Balancing:
To shelve books on higher shelves, step stool provided; to climb 2 flights of stairs to the Children's Library area.
Kneeling/Crouching:
Occasional-frequent to pick up books off the floor, from the back book drop; shelve or retrieve books on lower shelves; load printer; to enter and exit from children's reading nook.
MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT AND WORK AIDES
Computer terminal; telephone; typewriter; printer; wand; book truck; dumbwaiter; microfilm reader, microfiche reader, copier.

Frequently changing tasks, working closely with others as part of a team; occasionally performing multiple tasks simultaneously, occasionally noisy/distracting environment.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Formal Education:
High School Graduate or GED.
Experience:
Experience in business, use of computer helpful. Prefer experience working with the public, knowledge of library procedures and Dewey Decimal System. - Library Aide Page 3 SKILLS
Reading:
Forms, manuals, reference materials, library policies and procedures, memos from management.
Writing:
Write notes to staff or management, messages on library transactions or occurrences.
Math:
To be able to collect fines and make change.
Reasoning:
Constant with dealing with day to day library procedures.
Interpersonal:
Ability to deal with public with tact and courtesy; maintain composure with angry or verbally abusive individuals; provide information and assistance to library patrons; explain library procedures; ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with fellow employees.
