The library media specialist's purpose includes: To administer and provide library media service in the school in a way that incorporates curriculum, technology and staffing, so that patrons effectively retrieve, evaluate and utilize information, as well as develop a love of reading and life-long learning.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS
General To instruct students in the location, use and choice of appropriate materials, both print and non print To aid teachers/staff in the location and choice of materials, both print and non print, applicable for curriculum demands To select materials which meet curriculum needs, provide enjoyment and promote leisure activities that are age-appropriate and interest-targeted To establish media center policies and review them periodically, making adjustments when needed To facilitate distance learning opportunities for our students To manage the media center as a flexible, multi-tasking learning environment Specific Selection of materials for purchase Reviewed items in School Library Journal, ALAN, Virginia Readers list, Renaissance Place (Accelerated Reader) publications/catalogs, new publications Requested items from faculty for classroom and research use (SOL alignment) Reference materials—updating, standing order, new publications Audio-visual materials—videos, audiocassettes, DVDs County equipment purchases—reviewed, requested for classroom/administrative use, library instruction, school wide use, replacement of outdated equipment Replacement materials for lost, damaged, weeded items Magazine/journal/newspaper subscription maintenance Creation of local purchase orders for all purchases n Management of budget Title V funding - oversees project funding restrictions, labeling, processing, inventory Local funding County equipment funding Building fine account Research/Bibliographic instruction Online catalog and Dewey Decimal system instruction County and state online database instruction Use of periodicals, vertical files, newspapers Planning with teachers for research projects; creation of lists of resources Renaisance Learning (Accelerated Reader) program Selection and acquisition of fiction and non-fiction books Selection and acquisition of software for reading quizzes Instruction of program use for students/faculty Report generation Cataloging of materials; labeling of materials, including point structure Test monitoring Check out and renewal of books Student account maintenance Reading advisory for students Circulation desk management Check out of print materials, audiovisual materials, equipment Overdue notices to students, creation of lists Maintenance of student/faculty accounts Check out of reserve materials for teachers' research projects Processing/cataloging materials Check received materials against county purchase orders and packing slips Prepare all cataloging information for received materials Check purchased cataloging information from vendors Create records for catalog records for materials Label, barcode, stamp all materials Research materials Locate research materials for teachers' planned research projects Pull materials for reserve Work with students and teachers to locate materials—books, periodicals, vertical files, newspapers, database resources Equipment maintenance and repair Cleaning Changing bulbs Scheduling use Training for teachers in new equipment use Trouble-shooting problems with equipment use in classrooms Minor repair of equipment Preparation for county repair and surplus Student/faculty Internet accounts Maintenance of all accounts Communication with county personnel in creation of new accounts and reassignment of passwords Creation and maintenance of database for all student accounts Teacher and student instruction of use in library system Faculty copier (housed in library media center) Create teacher accounts Maintain operation of copier; notify company for repair and maintenance Provide monthly copy counts to company Instruct teachers and student workers in use of copier Online SOL testing assistant Provide assistance to assistant principal in charge of online testing Monitoring testing situations NovaNET online course program Creation of accounts for faculty/students Instruction in use of courseware Recordkeeping and reporting Monitoring of students using courseware Homework Hotline system Orientation for teachers Creation and maintenance of all accounts General maintenance of system—hardware and software Additional technology training NovaNET United Streaming ANGEL (SVETN) blackboard course SOL online testing TCPS Internet/Email training Marco Polo training Database training—SIRS, Grolier, Gale GroupKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Desired experience or training: Successful teaching experiences; school library media experience; Background in instructional technology; Background in curriculum development Special requirements: Ability to work well with students, teachers, parents, and administrators in planning and leading the library media and information technology program.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Required experience or training: Major or minor in Instructional Media and Technology or Library Media Education certification, as required by the state of VirginiaSPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge of the library system, computer programs (Follett Circulation, Renaissance Place), book selection procedures, use of research sources (print and non print), distance learning procedures (satellite taping, online sources)PHYSICAL DEMANDS/REQUIREMENTS
