Job Description

Library Services Specialist Part-time, up to 20 hours/week at $12.77 per hour. Evening and weekend availability is required. Schedule flexibility and a source of reliable transportation to and from work is necessary. Consider a one-year commitment at minimum to this position. Submit City of Radford application at 30 W. General Definition of Work:
Performs responsible clerical work in the public library system; does related work as required. Experience using online resources. Experience working in a library serving the general public preferred. Reference or circulations experience in a library preferred. Excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively and efficiently in a team-oriented environment. Ability to take direction well from immediate supervisors.
Essential Functions/Typical tasks:
  • Provide direct customer service; coordinate access to library resources.
  • Charge and discharge library materials.
  • Maintain accurate patron records.
  • Organize collection materials;
  • Shelving in all areas of the library accurately and efficiently.
  • Receive and convey suggestions for purchase.
  • Assist patrons with technology, research and other needs; act as a community resource.
  • Assist patrons with printing, faxing and scanning services.
  • Receive and handle money accurately.
  • Perform related tasks as assigned.
Knowledge, skills and abilities Some knowledge of the procedures, practices, and equipment of a public library; some knowledge of business English, spelling, and arithmetic; good reading skills, ability to learn standard library tasks readily and adhere to prescribed routines; ability to stand for extended periods of time and climb step ladders; ability to perform routine clerical and record-keeping tasks; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library employees and patrons; ability to speak clearly and concisely; ability to deal tactfully with the public; ability to type accurately at a reasonable rate of speed. Education and experience Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and some experience in general clerical or library work.
Physical requirements:
This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, crouching, bending, squatting, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, and lifting; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for operation of machines, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.
Special requirements:
Completion of pre-employment testing and background screening is a must. The City of Radford is an EEO employer.
