27J School District is seeking a dedicated, compassionate and resilient Middle/High School Math teacher to join our on-site educational team within a juvenile detention facility. The successful candidate will provide high-quality, engaging, standards-based math instruction to incarcerated youth ages 12-17. This role requires an educator who is passionate about working with at-risk youth and is committed to providing culturally relevant instruction. This role also requires a commitment to educational equity, knowledge of trauma-informed practices, and the belief in every student's capacity for growth and success. Our school environment requires flexibility, adaptability, and the capacity to adjust and modify instruction to students within the same class.Key Responsibilities:
Design and deliver engaging, district aligned math lessons that meet the individual and group learning needs of students many of whom are working to recover academic credits and develop life skills in a structured environment. Teach one or more math subjects (e.g., Algebra, Geometry, Basic Math Operations/Arithmetic, Entry Level Financial Literacy and on rarer occasion Physics, Calculus, Trigonometry) in a secure classroom environment. Differentiate instruction to accommodate varying academic levels and diverse learning styles, including English language learners and students with special needs-both behavior and emotional. Create a structured, supportive, inclusive and trauma-informed learning environment that promotes learning, respect and positive behavior. Foster curiosity, scientific literacy, and critical thinking in students with interrupted educational backgrounds. Integrate real-world applications and project-based learning, when feasible. Integrate restorative justice and social-emotional learning. Collaborate with correctional staff, counselors, and co-workers to support students' academic and personal development. Assess student progress through formal and informal methods and maintain accurate records of student attendance, grades, and achievement in accordance with facility, district and state requirements. Collaborate with other educators, counselors, and facility staff to support students' academic and personal growth. Participate in compliance staff training, team meetings, and professional development as requested. Comply with all facility and district policies, security protocols, and confidentiality standards.Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Math,, or Math Education, or related fields. (Master's degree preferred) Valid state teaching certification in secondary Math education. Strong understanding of differentiated instruction and classroom management. Prior teaching experience in alternative education, juvenile justice, or high-need settings strongly preferred. Ability to work in a secure facility and adapt instruction to meet the needs of justice-involved youth. Knowledge of trauma-informed practices, restorative justice, and youth development strategies. Strong classroom management and communication skills. Ability to build positive, respectful relationships with justice-involved youth. Must pass background check, fingerprint clearance, and any facility-specific training requirementsPreferred:
Experience working with at-risk youth, in alternative education, or within juvenile justice systems. Familiarity with trauma-informed education, restorative practices, or behavioral interventions.
