Job Description

Middle School Math (Specializing in the Foundation)
Woodlawn School:
2026-2027 School Year The Heart of the Role Let's be honest: middle school is a wild ride. At Woodlawn School, we don't just "handle" the throes of adolescence; we thrive in them. We are looking for an educator who sees the 11-to-15-year-old window as the most exciting time to be a teacher—a time when you can pivot a student's entire relationship with "I'm not a math person" into "I can solve anything." The ideal candidate is a mentor who understands that students in this age group are at a unique crossroads of curiosity and self-discovery. We are looking for a curious, enthusiastic leader who models lifelong learning and views the classroom as a space to build both mathematical skill and personal confidence during these pivotal years. We need a mentor who can take the fundamental concepts of 6th - 8th grade math, including but not limited to Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1 and turn them into a bridge that leads students confidently into the rest of their lives.
Who You Are The Adolescent Advocate:
You genuinely enjoy the energy, the questions, and the quirks of young students. You have the emotional intelligence to navigate their world with humor and patience.
The Integrative Thinker:
You hate the idea of math being stuck in a vacuum. You're the type of person who sees a bridge, a business plan, or a piece of music and immediately thinks, "I can use this to teach slope."
The Lifelong Learner:
You're curious. You model what it looks like to not have all the answers but to have the tools to find them.
The Collaborative Partner:
You enjoy working with the history teacher, the art teacher, and the science faculty to create projects that make students forget they're "at school" and remember they're "creating something."
What Your Days Will Look Like Making Impact:
You'll lead our foundational math courses, ensuring every student has a rock-solid grasp of Algebra 1 while feeling supported and seen.
Designing Curricula:
You won't just follow a textbook. You'll help build project-based, interdisciplinary experiences that connect math to the real world.
Mentoring:
Beyond the whiteboard, you'll be a steady presence in the Woodlawn community—leading service learning, coaching a club, or simply being a person students can trust.
Growing:
You'll be part of a faculty that values your professional evolution, offering you the autonomy to innovate and the support to fail forward. Join Us at Woodlawn Woodlawn is accredited by SAIS and Cognia , but more importantly, we are a community of people who love what we do. Ready to start? Send a cover letter (tell us your favorite middle school teaching story), your resume, and any brag-worthy recommendations to hello@woodlawnschool.org . Woodlawn School is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
The Toolkit You'll Need The Basics:
A Bachelor's degree in Math or Education is required (a Master's is even better).
The Experience:
Ideally, you've spent 3+ years in a classroom and know how to differentiate instruction so that the kid who is struggling and the kid who is bored are both challenged and engaged.
The Vibe:
You understand independent school culture—where "it's not my job" doesn't exist, but "how can I help?" does.
The Skillset:
You are a pro at middle school math - Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1, and you're flexible enough to potentially step into higher levels like Algebra 2 or Statistics in our Upper School.
