Do Great Things! Durham Technical Community College is hiring an Instructor in the First-Year Experience and College Success Department. The Instructor, College Success is responsible for the planning, delivery, and evaluation of classroom instruction and for providing those related services and support activities required for optimal student learning and effective educational programming. As a member of the Creative and Liberal Arts department, the Instructor, College Success teaches eight sections of ACA 122, leads a minimum of two Connect Sessions (new student orientation sessions), and advises special populations of students each semester. The Instructor, College Success, also works to develop and implement the learning outcomes of the department and division. Instructional Responsibilities Teach all courses, both curriculum and continuing education, as assigned, for the full duration of scheduled instruction; Be fully prepared with instructional plans for each class session and in accord with the stated objectives of the course; Maintain professional awareness of important college success issues, incorporating them into instruction in a manner consistent with course outlines and best practices; Use active learning methods and various instructional technologies to present course material and support instruction; Utilize office hours and be available out of class to students requiring additional assistance; Refer students as needed to the proper student support services; Program and Departmental Responsibilities Assist in the revision and development of course outlines, syllabi, curriculum, and instructional documentation required to meet the objectives of the First-Year Experience program; Assist in the identification, preview and acquisition of needed educational resources, including textbook selection, library materials, laboratory supplies, and other instructional provisions; Participate in program, departmental, divisional, and institutional meetings and other announced activities; Participate in in-service training and other opportunities for professional development, including attendance at off-campus activities, as feasible, and generally staying abreast of developments in the field; Institutional Responsibilities Serve as academic advisor to a specific population of at-risk students and as otherwise requested or needed by individual students; Facilitate Connect Sessions; Collaborate with and provide appropriate support to Student Services personnel in conducting student advising and registration, new student orientations, recruitment, and other related activities; Perform all duties with special attention to the college's mission, its commitment to the open door philosophy, and student success; Enforce academic policies and procedures at all times, and comply with all other institutional rules and regulations pertinent to classroom instruction and general employment; Maintain office and student records, processing reports, forms, and all other required paperwork in a timely, efficient manner, and checking for the accuracy, correctness and completeness of all data; Serve on committees as requested and fulfill committee assignments; Maintain effective, collaborative, and productive relations with other units of the college; Assume other necessary responsibilities and tasks as assigned by the Chair, department Dean, Chief Instructional Officer, Vice President, or the President. A master's degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology or related field

Work Experience:

One year of successful teaching experience in a community college or similar postsecondary institution or evidence of other appropriate experience relevant to the position

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

A thorough understanding of and commitment to the mission and philosophy of the North Carolina Community College System; Competence in oral and written communication skills necessary for effective teaching; Competence in computer technologies, such as word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation programs; Competence in using distance education technologies; Sensitivity to the needs and expectations of students and colleagues; Ability to establish and maintain effective and positive interpersonal relations throughout the college and the community; A valid North Carolina motor vehicle operator's license.

Normal Working Hours:

The Instructor, College Success is required to work a minimum of a 40-hour work week during the 9-month academic year which may include day, evening, and/or weekend responsibilities and duties . Work duties and responsibilities may be at the college's main campus, branch campuses, or other locations as assigned. The teaching load for this position is subject to change.
