Job Description

Position Subject to Availability of Budgeted Funds 9 month position Salary is based on experience. The role of the Instructor, Mathematics is to provide knowledge in his/her field of expertise and to promote various student-centered learning activities that will stimulate an interest in critical thinking and a desire for life-long learning. Various teaching strategies, learning styles and delivery methods including new technology systems utilized to reach this goal. The Instructor, Mathematics receives supervision from the Chair, Mathematics and Engineering Department. Implements college goals as related to instructional area. Prepares, teaches and evaluates assigned instructional courses (classroom, lab, clinical). Teaches evening classes, classes at other campuses and/or off-site locations, distance education classes, Internet classes or hybrid classes based on instructional and/or staffing needs as required. Updates course syllabi to reflect changes. Develops supplemental teaching materials to augment courses. Implements new teaching strategies as appropriate Evaluates textbooks for relevancy, quality, and currency, making recommendations as necessary per established policy. Maintains accurate records of students' attendance and performance. Submits reports in accurate and timely manner. Participates in development of curriculum course schedule. Participates in planning to identify needed courses (current and future). Adheres to assigned teaching load/hours. Makes recommendations for assigned courses based on evaluation criteria/process. Makes recommendations for new courses per constraints of common course library and/or NCCCS guidelines. Integrates new technology in instructional delivery methods. Participates in development, implementation and evaluation of goals and objectives for instructional area of the college. Participates in development, implementation, and evaluation of the activities and operations of the instructional area of the college. Participates in annual review of instructional program. Supplies information/data for the annual department budget based on stated goals. Adheres to/enforces policies and procedures related to academic area. Integrates teaching methods that are student oriented/student focused. Submits requests for instructional supplies as needed. Maintains a hazard free environment and practices safety in the classroom. Provides guidance and advice to assigned student advisees. Registers advisees. Maintains weekly office hours per college guidelines or as designated by off-campus assigned location. Attends advisement workshops and remains current in new technologies regarding registration. Keeps students advised of their progress in class. Writes letters of recommendations for students on request if appropriate. Participates in student recruitment activities. Incorporates retention strategies to encourage students to stay in programs. Stays abreast of new developments and changes in academic field. Participates in professional development, as appropriate, as related to: instructional area new teaching methods new technology professional organizations - locally, statewide, and nationally Requests funding necessary to participate in professional development activities. Assists with faculty recruitment, orientation and mentoring. Participates in activities that enhance the college mission. Participates in college's Institutional Effectiveness Plan. Participates in Faculty Senate. Serves on college's standing committees and ad hoc committees as requested. Attends all convocations, graduations and other college meetings as scheduled. Serves as advisor to student clubs or organizations as appropriate. Participates in administrative activities related to student admissions, progression and graduation, as requested. Adheres to college's policies and procedures. Performs other duties as assigned.
Required:
Master's degree with 18 graduate semester hours in mathematics or related field from a regionally accredited college or university.
Preferred:
Master's degree in mathematics or related field from a regionally accredited college or university. Two years teaching experience at the post-secondary level.
Knowledge of:
The community college system and a commitment to its mission. COA's mission and a commitment to it.
Ability to:
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Use a computer efficiently, especially standard office software. Demonstrate organizational and time management skills.
