Math Intervention Specialist (Grades 7-12) Reports to: Principal/Designee Position Summary The Math Intervention Specialist plays a critical role in secondary student academic success by designing, implementing, and coordinating targeted mathematics interventions for students in grades 7-12. This position is responsible for identifying struggling learners, delivering evidence-based math instruction, and collaborating with content-area teachers to integrate effective numeracy, algebraic thinking, and problem-solving strategies across the curriculum. The ultimate goal is to bridge foundational gaps, rebuild mathematical confidence, and ensure all secondary students meet or exceed grade-level graduation and college/career readiness standards. Responsibilities Targeted Secondary Instruction:
Provide targeted, evidence-based individual or small-group math interventions to secondary students performing below grade level. Focus heavily on bridging gaps in foundational algebra, proportional reasoning, functions, and multi-step problem-solving. Differentiate instructional materials and methods to meet diverse learning needs—including English Language Learners (ELL) and students with learning differences—while regularly tracking progress and adjusting strategies based on data.
Assessment & Placement Data:
Drive mathematical development by administering and interpreting formal and informal secondary math assessments, diagnostic screeners, and benchmark data. Analyze student metrics to shape Tier 2 and Tier 3 instructional focus, determine appropriate intervention placement, and maintain accurate records to share with administration, teachers, and parents.
Departmental Collaboration & Coaching:
Partner with middle and high school math departments to co-plan differentiated lessons, align intervention strategies with core curriculum standards, lead professional development workshops, and model research-backed methodologies (such as explicit instruction and visual mathematical modeling) for adult learners.
Community & Family Engagement:
Maintain a vital home-school connection by providing parents and guardians with strategies and resources to support secondary math success at home, while conducting regular meetings to discuss assessment results, graduation pathways, intervention plans, and student milestones.
Qualifications Education:
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, Secondary Education, or a closely related field.
Certification:
Valid state teaching credential with an endorsement or certification in Secondary Mathematics (Grades 7-12) or as a Math Specialist/Interventionist.
Experience:
Minimum of [2-5] years of successful classroom teaching experience at the secondary level, with a proven track record of improving student mathematics outcomes and passing rates on state or district benchmarks.
Technical Skills Educational & Secondary Math Software:
Proficient in digital math platforms, graphing utilities, and adaptive learning tools tailored for secondary students (e.g., IXL Math, Desmos, DeltaMath, MathXL, i-Ready, ALEKS).
Data & Assessment Systems:
Experienced with student information systems (SIS) and data analytics platforms (e.g., NWEA MAP, Renaissance Star Math, PowerSchool, Illuminate Education) for tracking benchmarks, credit deficiency risk, and Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) growth. Learning Management Systems (LMS): Skilled in navigating and managing instructional workflows via Google Classroom, Canvas, or Schoology.
Collaboration & Reporting Tools:
Proficient in productivity suites (Google Workspace, Microsoft Office) for generating compliance reports, tracking data trends, and creating professional development presentations. Skills and Competencies Deep understanding of secondary mathematical trajectories, including the progression from arithmetic to proportional reasoning, algebraic thinking, geometry, and data analysis. Strong familiarity with evidence-based practices for adolescent learners, including the Concrete-Representational-Abstract (CRA) framework adapted for abstract algebra, error analysis strategies, and scaffolded problem-solving. Proficiency in analyzing complex data sets to drive instructional choices, tier placement, and intervention exit strategies. Strong interpersonal and coaching skills to build trust, motivate disengaged adolescent learners, and collaborate effectively with secondary teachers and parents. Excellent organizational, mathematical modeling, and time-management abilities.
