Sep 1, 2026 Job Description Mathematics specialists in Mount Vernon City School District (MVCSD) work with a diverse range of students to develop Math K-8 and Algebra 1 content knowledge and skills through exploration/experimentation, reading, discussion, and writing. Mathematics specialists use a variety of instructional strategies to cultivate student awareness of how to make sense of, persevere through, and solve problems. The math specialist is responsible for designing meaningful and individualized academic lessons, small group activities, and a positive classroom environment that promotes individualized education. The math specialist will work in collaboration with classroom mathematics teachers to ensure a rich and appropriate learning experience as well as any extra support that students may need to be successful. The Mathematics Specialist position has several addition roles: Consultant, Coach, and Facilitator. As a Consultant, the specialist will assist districts with options for targeted instruction and additional intervention strategies. As a Coach, the specialist works with districts and teachers to identify areas of professional need and provides resources and strategies to address these. They can provide model lessons and assist with planning lessons and units. Specialists can assist with securing materials, resources, and data. As a Facilitator, the specialist can provide professional development for teachers and administrators which addresses curriculum, teaching strategies, trends, and data analysis. Mathematics Specialist in Mount Vernon City School District (MVCSD) schools will: Prepares all students for success with New York State (3-8 / Regents) mathematics exams; place an equal emphasis on developing mathematics thinkers by inviting students to ask questions, develop models, carry out investigations and analyze data Guide students in applying their subject matter knowledge and skills through evidence-based explanations and arguments and by challenging them to address real-world problems that impact the community students live in Help students see the relevance of mathematics in their everyday lives, as well as equip their students with the tools necessary to be critical consumers and innovative problem solvers within modern-day society Plan and execute appropriate activities for the students each day to meet the physical, emotional, intellectual, and social needs Provide continuous individual assessment of student abilities in math Customize curriculum according to students' individual needs Understand the wide range of needs that exist in a multi­age classroom Keep daily and detailed records for each student Develop culturally appropriate programs and activities Implement ongoing and individualized communication with parents and team members regarding the academic needs of the students Coaching
  • Assists teachers in building their mathematical and pedagogical knowledge Coaching
  • Focuses conversations with teachers on how students learn mathematics Consultant
  • Assists with the evaluation of math programs and provides recommendations on curriculum, materials, and instructional pedagogy Consultant
  • Assists in the evaluation of mathematics data utilizing the data support staff within our agency Facilitator
  • Customizes math professional development based on district and/or school needs
Position Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is required; a Master's degree is preferred A valid New York State Mathematics Certification (Common Branch and 5-9 or Common Branch and 7-12) Proven record of accomplishment for planning lessons with clear learning objectives and a means for assessing whether those objectives have been met Utilizes formal and informal assessment tools and knowledge of human development to employ appropriate learning activities. Strong organizational and communication skills Demonstrated content knowledge and familiarity with New York State Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards (i.e., Standards for Mathematical Practice, Clusters, Domains, Coherence Linkages, etc.) Demonstrated success in tailoring instruction to the needs of diverse learners Manages classroom routines and procedures. Ability to work collaboratively with others to achieve common goals Incorporates appropriate educational technology and media. Regularly communicate with parents outside of report cards and scheduled conferences. Attends all faculty meetings, workshops, faculty/staff retreats, assemblies, and celebrations. Maintains teacher web pages, weekly updates of assignments and grades on the web portal, production of interim, quarterly and semester grades. Reflects critically upon his or her teaching experience, identifies areas for further professional development as part of a professional development plan that is linked to grade level, department, and school philosophy, and is receptive to suggestions for growth.
