Teacher Scale Job Summary In collaboration with the Director of Secondary Education, this position is responsible for supporting curriculum, instruction and Algebra Readiness initiatives in grades 6-8. This position collaborates with the secondary director and school administrators to provide a coordinated system of mathematics instruction to students in grades 6-8. Three-fourths of the job responsibilities involve providing direct support to students identified by the ARI data and initiatives. Essential Functions Utilize mathematics roster data to target students and teacher classrooms in need of intervention as directed by the Algebra Readiness Initiative. Models instructional strategies, best practices, and specific instructional topics into the classroom instruction through collaborative teaching. Serves as a resource to the school's administrative staff regarding algebra readiness indicators. Acts as liaison between teachers, school administrators, and central office administration on matters related to algebra readiness initiatives outlined by the Virginia Department of Education and DCPS goals and programs. Assists in planning and implementation of grade 6-8 mathematics remediation. Assists with the 6-8 mathematics curriculum development and experiences related to the Algebra Readiness Initiative. Maintains detailed logs of support provided to teachers and students. Models non discriminatory practices in all activities. Initiates and maintains effective liaisons with professional cohorts and organizations to keep abreast of developments and research in the profession. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, division policy, and administrative regulation. Strives to maintain and improve professional competence. Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required. Performs any other related duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Must possess an in-depth knowledge of instructional best practices and acute awareness of student algebra-readiness initiatives and grant requirements. Effective instructional delivery techniques and the ability to guide and develop teachers. Thorough knowledge of the practices, methods and techniques used in the administration and supervision of all facets of assigned school. Thorough knowledge of prescribed School Board policies and procedures. Skill in the use of personal computers and related software packages, hardware and peripheral equipment. Must have the ability to report to work on a regular and punctual basis. Ability to communicate complex ideas effectively in both oral and written formats. Excellent organizational skills. Ability to motivate others to reach their fullest potential. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, the School Board, elected officials, parents, students and the general public. Qualifications, Education and Experience Hold a valid Virginia Department of Education teacher's license or certification in Mathematics (Middle Ed. 6-8, Algebra 1, Mathematics) or an endorsement area appropriate for the subject area. Five (5) years effective teaching experience at the middle school level is required. Master's degree in Curriculum, Leadership, or Mathematics is preferred. Must possess demonstrated evidence of leadership responsibilities beyond those required in the classroom. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the School Board may find appropriate and acceptable. Physical Requirements This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force. Work regularly requires speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions and occasionally requires pushing or pulling. Work has standard vision requirements. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound. Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data and observing general surroundings and activities. Must be mobile enough to monitor students in all instructional settings (in school and on school grounds). Work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment. Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic). Special Requirements Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate license(s), certificate(s) and/or endorsement(s) for the position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia or School Board. Valid driver's license in the Commonwealth of Virginia for the operation of division-owned/leased motor vehicles. The incumbent's driving record will be subject to periodic review and must be acceptable in accordance with the provisions of the Dinwiddie County School Board's policy manual.
