Epidemiology and Biostatistics Faculty Member

Western Atlantic University School of Medicine (WAUSM) currently invites applications for a full-time faculty member in Epidemiology and Biostatistics within the pre-clerkship phase (year 1 and 2) of the medical curriculum. This position is designed for an educator-scholar who is passionate about teaching foundational population health sciences and mentoring medical students in scholarly activity. The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering an integrated curriculum that equips students with essential skills in clinical epidemiology, biostatistics, evidence-based medicine, and critical appraisal of the medical literature. In addition, the faculty member will assist in supporting faculty and student collaboration on research and scholarly development. Our students study medicine in a highly integrated, systems-based, hybrid curriculum that incorporates active learning strategies into large and small group settings. The pre-clerkship foundational sciences program is built around a 5-semester (15 weeks per term) model of instruction with basic science concepts and competencies related to patient centered care integrated and woven throughout. The current campus includes multi-functional academic learning spaces, student study, tutoring and leisure space , faculty offices and collaboration areas, simulation and clinical exam rooms and outdoor spaces. WAUSM operates on three terms per year with a new class of students matriculating each term. Therefore, teaching duties and administrative responsibilities continue throughout the year. Duties and Responsibilities:

Teaching and Curriculum Development Actively teach, advise, mentor, and evaluate students in a manner that exemplifies excellence and care. Prepare teaching materials including presentations, pre-reading assignments, practice questions, quizzes, active learning activities, or other, as required. Assist in the creation and review of formative and summative assessments to evaluate student progress and performance. Revise teaching materials and techniques to stay current and innovative, aligning with the continuous improvement of the curriculum and supporting positive student outcomes. Ensure that all teaching materials, communications, posts, assessment materials and any other materials delivered to students are updated, current and polished. Support students through the Center for Academic Success and collaborate in their initiatives as required. Mentorship and Scholarly Activity Mentor faculty and students in research design, methodology, and statistical analysis. Guide students and faculty in conducting literature reviews, critical appraisal, and synthesis of evidence. Support faculty and student scholarly projects, including posters, presentations, and manuscripts. Provide consultation on study design and data interpretation for student-led and student-faculty collaborative research activities. Foster a culture of inquiry and academic scholarship among learners. Academic Service and Collaboration Participate in and support standing committees, task forces, accreditation efforts, academic and operational plans and initiatives as appointed or elected and/or determined by the Assistant Dean and Chair. Collaborate with interdisciplinary faculty to ensure curricular coherence and integration. Engage in institutional initiatives related to research, education, and community health. Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Dean and Chair or Dean.

Education, Experience and Attributes:

Earned doctoral degree (PhD, MD or MD/PhD, or equivalent degree) from an accredited institution of higher education. Previous experience in medical education, demonstrated teaching experience and skill in presenting to students and colleagues, and preparing students for Step 1 is desired. Experience with

environments preferred. Evidence of committee work and participation in other initiatives. Experience with curriculum development and continuous improvement desired. Experience with assessment programs and the ability to provide input for successful programmatic changes based upon assessment results and adult student learning. Solid technological skills and experience with virtual learning platforms (Canvas), computer-assisted delivery of didactic and active learning content, video-conferencing and other academic / computing platforms (eMedley, SharePoint, Microsoft suite and Teams, etc.). Ability and desire to work with others in a collegial and collaborative atmosphere. Strong communication skills in English. Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with faculty, staff, and students. Exhibit flexibility, adaptability and be open to and embrace creative, innovative, "break the mold" ideas of others. Comfortable living an island lifestyle and embracing that experience.
