Teaches one subject, or a group of subjects, such as math and science; works with one class all year or teaches different classes of students throughout the day. May mentor students, coach a school team or advise a student club. May specialize in working with students learning English or students with learning disabilities or emotional and behavioral disorders.
About SV Chess Academy Founded in 2024, SV Chess Academy is a South Bay youth chess enrichment program offering after-school classes and evening classes hosted at our academy locations, with a Grandmaster on our team supporting our coaching and training. Our mission — "Think. Learn. Thrive." — centers on building kids' critical thinking and confidence through chess in a structured, well-run classroom environment. About the Role We're looking for a coach who is passionate about the game and wants to help kids build lifelong skills through chess — someone who can inspire sharp young minds to explore and fall in love with the game. This is a teaching and classroom-leadership role, not just chess instruction — we want someone who can manage a group of young students confidently and grow with the program over time. Both part-time and full-time schedules are available, and private lessons are available as an optional additional activity.

Schedule Weekdays, 3-8 PM (1-3 classes per day to start) Weekend morning classes and tournaments Small classes with a 1:12 coach-to-student ratio Responsibilities Lead after-school chess classes (starting after 3 PM) Lead evening classes hosted at our academy Support weekend classes and tournaments as needed Optionally teach private lessons as an additional activity Establish and enforce classroom expectations, especially with new students Manage student behavior, transitions, and breaks to keep classes running smoothly Keep young learners engaged throughout each session Maintain a positive, structured learning environment while managing group dynamics Communicate professionally with academy staff on class progress and student needs Grow into additional classes/hours as the program expands Qualifications / Requirements Prior experience coaching, teaching, or assisting with children Demonstrated ability to manage a classroom or group of young students Strong chess knowledge and playing ability Reliable availability in the South Bay Ability to pass a TB test and Live Scan background check Professional communication and reliability Genuine passion for chess and a desire to mentor kids long-term (part-time or full-time) Preferred Qualifications National Master (NM) title or other master-level chess credential Prior experience with structured youth education programs or curricula Compensation $40-$60/hour, depending on experience.
Training / Support
Coaches receive training, teaching materials, and lesson plans, with guidance from a Grandmaster on our team. We're developing a standardized coaching system so every class runs on a consistent, proven structure.
