Job Description

Description The Waverly School seeks teachers who resonate with the school's mission to cultivate curious, resourceful, confident learners who demonstrate intellectual engagement, critical and creative thinking, respect for individual differences, a strong awareness of personal responsibility, and an active commitment to social justice. The ideal candidate is a progressive math teacher who wants to be involved in the community in the classroom and beyond. The middle school math program seeks to be an project-based learning program where students gain fluency in pre-algebraic concepts and are challenged to make meaning and problem solve. The successful candidate will incorporate the understanding that math is not just abstract problems but is a language that explains and illustrates the world around us. The middle school math teacher will have the capacity to meet the needs of a wide range of learners. Teachers at Waverly are collaborative and the middle school teachers function as a team supporting student growth in a two year curriculum where teachers take a deep interest in students as individual learners. Waverly teachers enjoy freedom to design curriculum to meet the needs of students. The ideal candidate will have a strong mathematical background and be excited about curriculum design.
Primary Responsibilities:
Plan and design curriculum that aligns with Waverly's scope and sequence and as aligned with the school mission and philosophy. Work closely with math teachers to plan and design curriculum to align and support the preschool-12 academic program. Use teaching strategies that include small and large group instruction, hands-on experiential learning, inquiry-based learning, integrated learning. Use Responsive Classroom techniques to set-up, run and develop a consistent, caring classroom environment. Support the student life program through serving as an advisor to a cohort of middle school students. Teach an elective•topics determined in collaboration with the Division Heads. Create clubs or other extracurricular opportunities for student engagement. Collaborate with middle school faculty and learning support educators. Use formative and summative assessment tools to meet student's learning needs Monitor and document student progress throughout the year and evaluate learning development. Lead parent/teacher and/or facilitate student led conferences. Write and edit reports that include checklists and narrative writing Chaperone overnight and in-town field trips, outdoor education trips, or other experiential learning opportunities which may extend beyond regular school hours. Build and maintain positive relationships with parents. Have regular communication with parents-via email and newsletters. Support admissions and other school events (i.e. parent education nights, graduation, etc.) Attend special events during evenings and weekends. Attend and participate in weekly faculty meetings (before or after school) and occasional workshops, in-service opportunities, and other training seminars. Adhere to policies and procedures as outlined in the the employee and faculty handbooks Complete other duties as assigned by the Division Head or Head of School Required Skills/Abilities Strong commitment to anti-racist and inclusive practices that support students of all backgrounds to succeed Ability to self-reflect and demonstrate personal growth Ability to plan, manage, and evaluate curriculum Excellent verbal and written communication skills with adults and children Ability to collaborate and communicate with teachers, staff, parents, and students in a positive and constructive way Proficient in Google, Microsoft office suite or related software as required for recordkeeping and documentation Confident with learning platforms such as Google Classroom, Blackbaud or other educational software. Genuine interest in and respect for students in their middle school years Strong sense of healthy teacher/student boundaries Background in Project-Based Learning pedagogy or strong desire to work within a PBL framework Education and Experience Bachelor degree or higher; Master's and/or teaching credential preferred Minimum 2-5 years teaching experience, preferably in middle school Preference for progressive educational experiences
Physical Demands:
Work in person, on campus during school hours. Work with frequent interruptions. Maintain emotional control under stress. Must be able to stand, lift, push, pull, stoop and bend for short periods of time. Regularly work on repetitive tasks. Occasionally lift 15-45 pounds. Prolonged periods of standing and walking throughout classrooms and between several campus locations, including the School Farm. Regularly spend long hours sitting and using office equipment and computers. Regularly move up and down stairs.
Other Employment requirements:
Initial and continued employment background investigation required•fingerprints via Live Scan Initial and continued TB Assessment required for employment in CA schools. CPR/AED/First Aid certification training every two years. Annual Mandated Reporter and Harassment Prevention Training and any other required training. Adhere to school policies and procedures as outlined in the Employee and Faculty Handbooks.
