Job Summary:
An English teacher at James Irwin Charter Middle School is a multi-faceted job: he or she is responsible for weekly lesson plans for the Literature and Grammar/Writing curricula, independently teaching several sections of classes, and assessing student growth and progress through a variety of standards in the areas of Core Knowledge, vocabulary, grammar, reading, and writing. The literature selection includes novels, plays, poetry, and nonfiction at all grade levels from the pre-approved curriculum list.

The teacher is also required to keep regular contact with parents/guardians of students who are not mastering the material, and teachers are encouraged to support students individually as much as possible.

In the English department, teachers must assign and grade homework and update all grades in Infinite Campus by a set deadline each week.

Teachers collaboratively create lesson plans weekly and post these plans for approval from the Lead Teacher.

Teachers at JICMS also aim for being data-oriented and aware of student performance in general, especially on standardized tests. Teachers do this through weekly grade summaries submitted to their Lead Teacher.

All JICMS teachers also share several extra responsibilities including monitoring car line, study halls, occasionally chaperoning school events, and proctoring study halls,.These responsibilities will be assigned during pre-service training and maintained throughout the academic year.

The successful candidate should…
  • Have advanced knowledge and mastery of literary analysis and composition;
  • Be willing to demonstrate mastery by teaching a sample lesson;
  • Be familiar with and commit to using the Active Participation or Explicit Instruction methodology by Dr. Anita Archer;
  • Be willing to work with a team of faculty who provide consistent teaching methods and assessments throughout all classes at JICMS;
  • Integrate character into lessons as appropriate and always exhibit the highest character traits;
  • Be willing to accept and implement feedback on performance via teacher coaching, video recording, and informal and formal evaluations; and,

  • Maintain detailed, accurate and up-to-date student records;
  • Actively monitor a study hall as assigned;
  • Perform other duties, as assigned (e.g., traffic duty, after-school detention); and,

Minimum Work Experience and Education:
JICMS follows the Colorado Department of Education requirements for hiring teachers of core subjects. Therefore, the successful candidate needs to show subject matter competency through at least one of the following:
  • CO teaching license, or
  • B.A. or higher in assigned subject area, or
  • 24 semester credit hours in assigned subject area, or
  • Praxis in assigned subject area.
Selection Procedure:
Candidates who are selected to interview will be asked to teach a sample lesson to students, faculty and/or administration.
