Job Description

Middle School Religion History & Geography Teacher Saint John XXIII Parish Corporation 89 Bull Hill Lane, West Haven, CT 06516 Full-time Full-time As part of the Faculty of Saint Lawrence School, the classroom teacher is responsible for creating a nurturing, academically rigorous, and faith-filled learning environment for students in the Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 8 classrooms. This role blends strong instructional practice with a commitment to modeling and teaching the values of the Catholic faith. The teacher partners with families, colleagues, and school administrators to support the spiritual, intellectual, social, and emotional development of every child. Saint Lawrence School is seeking a dynamic teacher for our Grade 6-8 Religion, Social Studies and United States History classes. Candidates must be a practicing Catholic and in good standing with their local parish. Our school has a 10-month calendar (late August to early June) and our school hours are 7:30am-3:00pm.   • Instruct and assess a variety of topics outlined by the Archdiocese of Hartford standards Key Responsibilities Plan and deliver standards-aligned instruction in core subject areas (e.
g., Catholic Religion, History, Geography) following the Archdiocese of Hartford curriculum. Integrate Catholic teachings and values into daily lessons, classroom culture, and interactions with students. Foster a positive, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment that supports student engagement, curiosity, and growth. Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse learning needs, abilities, and backgrounds of students. Assess student progress through formative and summative assessments; provide timely, constructive feedback. Collaborate with colleagues on curriculum planning, school initiatives, and professional development / learning. Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress, classroom activities, and school events. Participate in school liturgies, prayer services, and faith-based activities as part of the school's Catholic identity. Maintain accurate records , including attendance, grades, and required documentation. Uphold all school policies , including safety protocols, behavioral expectations, and professional standards as outlined in the Staff Handbook. Other Responsibilities Weekly Participation in After School Staff Meetings (Tuesdays, 2:30-3:00pm) and Early Dismissal Professional Learning (Fridays, 1:00-3:00pm); Participation in some evening events, including Back-To-School Night, Open Houses, Family-Teacher Conferences, Christmas & Spring Concerts, and Graduation; Participation in Archdiocesan Events (Fall Teacher Conference, Spring Mass in Hartford). Bachelor's degree in education related to the grade level taught (Master's degree preferred). Valid state teaching certification or eligibility to obtain certification. Demonstrated understanding of child development and effective instructional practices. Strong classroom management skills and the ability to build positive relationships with students. VIRTUS certification and passing background checks. Commitment to the mission and teachings of the Catholic Church. Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills. Preferred Qualifications Prior experience teaching in a Catholic or faith-based school. Familiarity with standards-based grading and curriculum frameworks. Ability to integrate technology into instruction. Experience with differentiated instruction, small-group learning, and/or intervention strategies.
