Job Description

Position Summary The Reading Teacher provides specialized reading instruction and literacy support to students by developing, selecting, and modifying instructional plans, interventions, and materials to meet the needs of all learners. The teacher delivers instruction using evidence-based literacy practices, data-driven instructional strategies, and developmentally appropriate techniques that support reading comprehension, vocabulary development, fluency, written response, critical thinking, and academic language. As a STEM-focused middle school, CMIT-South Middle School expects the Reading Teacher to support literacy across content areas by helping students access complex informational texts, technical vocabulary, research-based writing, and interdisciplinary STEM learning experiences. The Reading Teacher provides an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of students. This position monitors and evaluates student performance, develops and implements plans to improve reading achievement, maintains required records, and follows required procedures and practices. Duties and Responsibilities Establishes clear reading and literacy goals and objectives aligned to the School Improvement Plan and the academic mission of CMIT-South Middle School; Plans and prepares reading lessons, assignments, interventions, instructional materials, and assessments that address student needs; Establishes learning objectives consistent with student reading data, curriculum frameworks, Maryland College and Career Ready Standards, and knowledge of adolescent literacy development; Provides explicit instruction in reading comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, phonics when appropriate, written response, close reading, annotation, and evidence-based analysis; Supports students in reading and analyzing literary, informational, technical, and STEM-related texts across content areas; Prepares, administers, and corrects evaluations, assessments, reading diagnostics, progress-monitoring tools, and classroom-based measures, and records results; Uses assessment data to identify reading strengths, skill gaps, intervention needs, and appropriate instructional groupings; Selects and uses appropriate instructional strategies including, but not limited to, modeling, guided reading, small-group instruction, direct instruction, group discussions, demonstrations, multimedia teaching aids, digital literacy tools, and differentiated literacy stations; Evaluates student progress using appropriate assessment techniques and adjusts instruction based on student performance data; Provides targeted support and intervention for students performing below grade level in reading; Collaborates with English Language Arts teachers, STEM teachers, special education teachers, ESOL staff, counselors, administrators, and other school personnel to support literacy development across the curriculum; Maintains order and discipline in the classroom conducive to effective learning and takes all necessary safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities; Creates a classroom environment that provides for student involvement in the learning process and enables each student to achieve reading and literacy objectives; Promotes student confidence, engagement, independence, and a positive attitude toward reading; Counsels pupils when academic and adjustment problems arise and refers students for additional support when appropriate; Confers with parents and students regarding progress, reading goals, intervention needs, and academic concerns; Arranges and participates in teacher-parent or teacher-student conferences as necessary; Maintains accurate and complete records as required by law, Board Policy, Administrative Regulation, and school-based expectations; Monitors appropriate use and care of equipment, textbooks, novels, intervention materials, digital tools, classroom resources, and facilities; Attends and actively participates in staff/faculty meetings, department meetings, collaborative planning sessions, data meetings, professional learning communities, and school improvement activities; Provides input regarding the planning of instructional goals, reading initiatives, intervention strategies, assessment practices, and methods to improve student literacy outcomes; Improves skill and knowledge base in current trends, research, and methodology in literacy instruction, adolescent reading development, the science of reading, instructional technology, multicultural content, problem solving, and interdisciplinary STEM connections; Supports schoolwide literacy initiatives that strengthen reading, writing, speaking, listening, research, and academic vocabulary across all subject areas; Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for paraprofessional educators, student teachers, and volunteers, as applicable; and Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications Ability to work with diverse populations; Knowledge of school organization, goals and objectives, curriculum, teaching techniques, current trends, research, and materials of instruction in reading and literacy; Excellent knowledge and understanding of the teaching and learning process, particularly as it relates to adolescent literacy and reading intervention; Knowledge of evidence-based reading strategies that support comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, decoding when appropriate, written expression, and content-area literacy; Ability to analyze student reading data and use results to plan, differentiate, and adjust instruction; Ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives, multicultural education, equity, and culturally responsive teaching practices; Ability to support literacy development within a STEM-focused instructional environment; Ability to infuse technology, digital literacy tools, and assessment platforms into curriculum and instruction; Ability to work effectively with students, parents, administrators, colleagues, community partners, and other school system staff; and Excellent oral and written communication skills. Education and/or Experience Requirements Bachelor's degree required in an applicable field of education from a regionally accredited college or university. Teaching experience in reading, English Language Arts, literacy intervention, or middle school instruction preferred. Experience using reading assessment data to plan instruction, monitor progress, and provide intervention is preferred. Certification Holds or is eligible for a Professional Certificate appropriate to the area of assignment issued by the Maryland State Department of Education. Reading, English Language Arts, Reading Specialist, or related literacy certification preferred, as applicable. Supervisory Responsibilities Supervision of classroom paraprofessional(s), dedicated assistants, classroom assistants, student teachers, or volunteers, if applicable.
