The Sundrop School "Forest School After School" Teacher Job Description Posted September 1st, 2026 The Sundrop School seeks an After-School Program Teacher to join our team, at our Nature-Based, Montessori school in Roscommon, MI. The mission of The Sundrop School is to provide a nurturing, educationally-rich, early childhood environment that meets the developmental needs of the whole child, while initiating children into a lifelong, meaningful relationship with the natural world.
Program Description:
The Sundrop School's "Forest School After School" program offers childcare in a mixed-age session for children ages three to eleven. These sessions run from approximately 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm with children, and have a 2:18 teacher-child ratio with the schedule of 2:30 pm to 6:00 pm. The children spend a minimum of 1 hour per day outdoors in nature. The Sundrop School is located at Good Shepherd Methodist Church. The Teacher must currently be able to pass a background check through LARA (Licensing and Regulatory Affairs), and complete a CPR/First Aid course as well as health and safety courses, and be at least 16 years of age. This is the PERFECT after-school job for high school or college students looking to get experience and build their resume in the field of early childhood or elementary education.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with the director and other after-school teacher to develop an authentic, nature-based after school program that serves the diversity of the local community and follows the local regulations in Northern Michigan.
  • Assist in providing a positive, healthy, low stress, and safe learning environment to meet the educational and developmental needs of young children by focusing on learning styles and temperament.
  • Promote the child's development in the cognitive, social-emotional, and physical domains with an emphasis on compassion, language, social competence, ethnic and disability awareness, as well as health & safety.
  • Must love nature and enjoy spending hours outside at a time.
  • Must be comfortable working with a variety of ages (3-11).
  • Assist in preparing the classroom environment and forest environment, materials and equipment; help ensure that all materials are in good repair and all sets are complete. Develop and make materials when needed.
  • Assist in the implementation of lesson plans that are nature-based, place-based, or STEAM based. No technology. Ensure proper use of materials and activities.
  • Allow for input from the program team and parents.
  • Give support to children who require help with homework or reading responsibilities.
  • Assist in preparing snacks for children.
  • Assist in the planning and maintenance of the outdoor environment.
  • Assist the other teacher when prospective children visit the school.
  • Provide first aid as needed and complete appropriate forms for parents.
  • Assist in cleaning tasks and have strong cleaning abilities in order to clean classrooms, kitchen and bathrooms on a daily basis.
After-School Guide Requirements:
The successful candidate will have/demonstrate the following:
  • Shall provide appropriate care and supervision of children at all times.
  • Act in a manner that is conducive to the welfare of children.
  • Preferred experience in childcare (child care center, babysitting, camp counselor, work in public or private schools)
  • Entrepreneurial spirit - you demonstrate flexibility, open-mindedness, and see opportunity in obstacles, and are energized by using creativity and resourcefulness to anticipate challenges and create solutions to problems.
  • Willingness to work hard - You have the aptitude, stamina, time, and appetite to raise yourself to the challenge of leading the program. You will not be alone, but you will be busy.
  • Creative and enthusiastic communication/presentation skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team as well as independently.
  • Strong organizational, time-management, and multi-tasking skills.
  • Sound character and ability to pass a criminal background check.

Compensation and Benefits:
  • Hourly pay of $16.
50 - 18.00 per hour (pay is based on experience and education level)
Start Date:
  • The FSAS program begins August 17th
  • Teacher would be expected to help prepare the classroom, participate in staff meetings and trainings prior to the beginning of the school year.
  • The after-school program would follow the RAPS (Roscommon Area Public Schools) calendar and observe all holiday breaks and early release days.
