This is a full-time position with a guaranteed duration of 24 months, contingent upon continued funding. There is a possibility of extension should additional funding be secured.
Department Summary:
The Fowler Museum at UCLA explores global arts and cultures with an emphasis on Africa, Asia, the Pacific, and the Indigenous Americas—past and present. The Fowler enhances understanding and appreciation of the diverse peoples, cultures, and religions of the world through dynamic exhibitions, publications, and public programs, informed by interdisciplinary approaches and the perspectives of the cultures represented. Also featured is the work of international contemporary artists presented within the complex frameworks of politics, culture and social action. The Fowler provides exciting, informative and thought-provoking exhibitions and events for the UCLA community and the people of greater Los Angeles and beyond.
Position Summary:
Under the direction of the NAGPRA Program and Archaeological Collections Manager at the Fowler Museum at UCLA, the NAGPRA Assistant(s) will carry out duties to support the daily implementation of NAGPRA (Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act), CalNAGPRA, and the UC Policy on Cultural Affiliation and Repatriation. In support of the NAGPRA and archaeological collections team, this position will include working with archaeological and ethnographic collections, collections-related research, working with various databases and documentation, handling confidential information, and searching campus spaces for NAGPRA materials. The NAGPRA Assistant completes work in accordance with professional standard museum ethics and best practices. Accepts projects from the NAGPRA Program and Archaeological Collections Manager. Discusses project goals with supervisor regularly. In the absence of supervisor, accepts counsel and direction from Repatriation Coordinator and Curator of Native American Cultures, NAGPRA/CalNAGPRA Administrative Manager, Director of Collections and Registration, Deputy Director, and Museum Director.
Salary & Compensation:

Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Qualifications:
At least 1 year of previous experience in a museum collections or repository environment (Required) Working knowledge of museum related regulations, especially the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act and CalNAGPRA (Preferred) Demonstrated experience working with Indigenous communities (Preferred) Excellent oral and written communication skills (Required) Ability to work in a team setting (Required) Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully in a professional environment (Required) Proficient in Adobe Acrobat, PowerPoint, MS Word and Excel (Required) Ability to lift 40 lbs or more on a regular basis (Required) Excellent attention to detail (Required) Ability to organize time, set priorities and perform effectively under deadline (Required) Skill in museum object handling (Preferred) Proficient in FileMakerPro (Preferred) Experience working with museum content management systems (Preferred)
Education, Licenses, Certifications, & Professional Affiliations:
Bachelor's Degree or higher in Anthropology, Museum Studies, American Indian Studies, Archaeology, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience (Required)
