The role assists and supports all areas of Preparation and is able to follow through projects from beginning to end. Responsibilities include assisting with care and safekeeping of Museum collections and loans, shipping and receiving, packing, installation, and mounting artworks of all types under the supervision of the Chief Preparator and/or any member of the Registration Department. Administrative responsibilities include processing inventories, care and maintenance of supplies, tools, and audio-visual equipment; assisting with coordinating departmental tasks and programs; lead temporary and contract staff as assigned. Evening and week-end hours as necessitated by the schedules and deadlines of the Preparation Department as determined by the Chief Preparator.
Key Qualifications:
Demonstrated practical experience (a minimum of five years) in a museum setting working as an art handler, fabricator, carpenter, or A/V tech including experience coordinating and managing projects. Able to work independently or in a team setting with a high level of attention to detail, sense of urgency, and ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines. Working knowledge of museum best practices and standards in handling artworks (during transportation, un/packing, condition reporting, and hanging) and in installing and de-installing artwork (hanging, rigging, tethering systems, anchor types and installation methods, security hardware types and installation, etc.) Thorough knowledge of carpentry, construction (including studding, drywall and wall finishing). Thorough knowledge of materials employed in art handling, carpentry, and construction. Proficiency with moving and lift equipment including but not limited to staging dollies, a-frames, painting carts, push-around aerial lift platforms, and scissor lifts. Good organizational and problem-solving abilities; good communication skills, as well as strong listening skills. Computer skills and familiarity with computers and electronic media. Working knowledge of gallery lighting (wiring/adapting fixtures, creating custom gels, knowledge of different styles of bulbs and their applications). Professional demeanor when interacting with staff, couriers, and visiting artists; including but not limited to safe/proper dress code. Fluent in English and knowledge of Spanish.
Preferred Qualifications:
Strong understanding of AV functions and experience working with time based and new media technologies to include single and multi-channel video installations. Graphic design and/or drafting skills preferred.

Physical Demands :
Walk, bend, lift (up to 75 pounds) files, office supplies, and electronic equipment. Finger dexterity to pick up paper and use computer keyboard. Close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading. Ability to hear in normal tones including telephone and face-to-face conversation. Essential Functions included, but are not limited to: Art Handling and Installation Perform and assist with the unpacking/packing, preparation, and installation/de-installation of artwork with Registrars and guest artists and guest curators, to the highest standards of presentation and safety. Perform and assist with the cleaning, repair, or repositioning of artwork as directed by Registrars or Conservators. Assist in the movement of crated artworks through exhibition spaces, hallways, elevators, and loading dock (including the safe and secure loading/unloading of vehicles) in coordination with the Chief Preparator and Registrars. Support the placement and adjustment of gallery lights per the direction of the Curatorial Department to properly illuminate exhibitions. Maintains PAMM's Buildings and Grounds (including sculpture garden and installations along the east and west porticos). Supports Preparation Department staff assigned to assist with these duties.
Fabrication:
Capable of performing demolition/construction and painting of galleries. Assist with installing and de-installing of pedestals, plinths, freestanding and wall mounted vitrines, exhibition furniture, and one-of-a-kind artist-driven constructions, among other special projects.
Perform basic fabrication duties:
Cutting using contractor-style table saws and/or sliding table saws, sliding compound miter saws, abrasion disc chop saws, light-duty routers, and angle grinders. Boring using drill presses, handheld drills and drivers, rotary hammer drills, specialty bits and anchors, etc. Assemblies with biscuits, precision-based glue-ups, cold connections with custom hardware, etc. Framing, sheet rocking, tapping/mudding, sanding, finishing and demolishing walls as required Independently patch small sections of walls, floors, and ceilings and paint entire surfaces to industry standards. Support with the installation and de-installation of environmental elements like carpet, curtains, and glass panels, etc. Perform and assist with other fabrication and de-installation tasks as needed and assigned. Audio Visual Assist in the installation and de-installation of time-based/new media artworks. Read drawings, plans, spec sheets and help pull equipment from A/V inventory. Perform other audio-visual tasks as needed and assigned.
