The Children's Services Specialist is responsible for overseeing and managing the daily operations of the Children's Room at the Tavares Public Library. This creative, dependable, and energetic professional develops engaging library services for children from infancy through age 13 and their caregivers, fostering a welcoming environment that encourages lifelong reading, learning, and discovery. The position focuses on three primary areas:

Children's Services & Programming - Designing and delivering high-quality early literacy programs, story times, educational activities, and family events.
Children's Collection Development - Maintaining a vibrant and relevant children's book collection.
Community Outreach - Building partnerships with local schools, childcare providers, community organizations, and families to promote library services and literacy initiatives.

The Children's Services Specialist serves as the library's primary resource for children's literature and early literacy while providing outstanding customer service to patrons of all ages. At times, this position may also assist with circulation, reference, and technology support as part of a collaborative library team. This is a 40-hour-per-week position that includes one evening each week until 7:00 p.m. and alternating Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Children's Services & Programming

Oversee the daily operation, appearance, and functionality of the Children's Room.
Plan, promote, present, and evaluate story times, early literacy programs, school-age activities, family events, and seasonal programming.
Develop innovative educational and recreational programming that supports literacy, learning, and community engagement.
Conduct library tours, class visits, and educational programs for schools, childcare centers, homeschool groups, and community organizations.
Provide readers' advisory services for children, parents, caregivers, and educators.
Assist patrons of all ages with reference, technology, and informational needs.
Create attractive book displays and learning spaces that encourage reading and exploration. Children's Collection Development
Monitor, select, and evaluate the children's collection and community needs to ensure a relevant and high-quality collection according to library collection development practices.
Merchandise collections through displays and seasonal promotions to increase circulation and discovery. Outreach & Community Engagement
Represent the library at outreach events, community festivals, and school functions.
Build partnerships that expand awareness and use of library services.
Serve as the Tavares Public Library representative on Lake County Library System Youth Services committees and participate in countywide initiatives.

MINMINUM QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND

ABILITIES

Knowledge of early childhood development and early literacy principles.
Familiarity with children's literature, publishing trends, and age-appropriate materials from birth through middle school.
Experience planning and presenting engaging programs for children and families.
Excellent communication and customer service skills with children, caregivers, educators, and community partners.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.
Ability to work independently while contributing positively to a collaborative team environment.
Experience with library circulation systems and online catalogs.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, email, internet research, and library technologies
Ability to assist patrons with computers, mobile devices, printing, digital resources, and technology troubleshooting.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

1. Graduation from an accredited university, preferred 2. At least two (2) years experience working at a responsible, supervisory level in a public library 3. Experience interacting with children in an educational setting (A comparable amount of training, education or experience can be substituted for the minimum qualifications.)

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Work is predominantly conducted in a library setting. Library events held in alternative indoor or outdoor settings may involve traversing uneven surfaces, and exposure to variations in light and weather.
Must be available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and Saturdays.
