Job Description

The City of Norfolk's Department of Libraries is currently seeking a Library Associate I for its Larchmont Branch. This position assists with the daily operations of the library. Acts as an assistant to the supervisor. Provides customer service to patrons by developing and delivering age appropriate programs and readers' advisory. Promotes the general use of facilities and assists patrons in the use of collection and computers.
Departmental Hiring Salary Range:
$47,262.29 Essential functions include but are not limited to: Plans and conducts Early Literacy programs such as Babygarten and Toddler Time. Plans and conducts programs for youth and families, including Summer Reading programming. Assists in building and maintaining the branch's juvenile and young adult collections. Prepares and maintains book displays. Plans promotes events by selecting and organizing materials, scheduling speakers and performers, creating promotional materials, and coordinating marketing. Provides customer service by assisting patrons with basic reference questions, providing assistance with computers and equipment, and recommending reading material. Performs circulation activities by checking materials in and out, reserving material requests, registering new patrons, coordinating interlibrary loans and collecting fees. Provides supervision to volunteers, and acts as supervisor in the absence of the branch manager. Proficient with desktop computers and Microsoft Office. Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree or equivalent. One year of experience in library or related services. Valid Driver's license or Commercial Driver's license may be required depending on assignment.
Work Hours:
40 hours/week; evenings and weekends may be required
