Position Announcement - Weekend Manager The M (the Minnesota Museum of American Art) is a St. Paul-based museum with a small, dedicated staff and a big mission: to explore American identities and experiences through art and creativity, inspire understanding and common humanity through the power of art and community, and foster engagement, inclusion, and respect. A primarily visual arts museum, the M's exhibitions and programs are co-curated with M staff in collaboration with diverse partners, focusing on lived experiences and creativity of the many artists, cultures, and communities that have been historically, and continue to be, underrepresented by American museums. This model has been intentionally developed and has fostered meaningful, sustainable partnerships that benefit both the museum and its partners, as well as the people they serve. Goals that have united civic, philanthropic, and artistic leaders and the community in support of the M include: 1. Preserving and engaging the public with the M's unique collection, which includes more than 5,000 artworks showcasing the diverse voices of American artists past and present with a focus on Minnesota /regional artists; 2. Creating a new collaborative programming model suited to our times; and 3. $24-26/hour depending on experience , 24 hours per week. Part-time regular employees are eligible for 3% matching 403(b) contributions, paid parking, PTO, Paid Holidays, ESST. Position Overview The M seeks an individual to manage the museum on weekends to ensure visitor, building, and art safety and security; oversee PT weekend staff and volunteers; manage weekend events; monitor building systems; facilitate positive visitor experiences. This role works closely with the Visitor Experience Manager. Workdays are 8 hours during the week (flexible Tuesday through Friday during the day primarily, but potential evenings on occasion ) and Saturday and Sunday from 9:30am-5:30 pm, for a total of 24 hours weekly.
Primary duties include:
Open and close the museum on Saturdays and Sundays, following outlined procedures Oversee the weekend operations of the reception desk, retail area, and museum with a focus on excellent customer service Manage weekend , and occasional weekday , special event and program logistics and fl ow including set-up and tear down of furniture and AV equipment Monitor museum information for accuracy (website, wayfinding, floor maps, etc ) and alert staff to any errors or changes needed Observe and monitor the HVAC system and building systems, reporting any issues Identify any issues with exhibits and facilities and report them via proper channels Manage museum safety efforts, including first aid kits, AEDs, response trainings Understand and lead emergency procedures on weekends Deescalate issues in the museum; serve as a leader in deescalation practices Complete Incident Reports when necessary Assist with visitor data collection efforts Expand offerings and make available to visitors ADA Accommodations and assistive tools to enrich visitor experience Monitor cameras and build ing access to ensure visitor, volunteer, staff, and art safety and security Serve as an ambassador for the museum, sharing information about the collection, exhibitions, programs, and other opportunities Manage retail and donation cash deposits Work with other members of the museum to ensure the weekend museum experience is safe, enjoyable, and engaging for all Collaborate with Visitor Experience Manager on all aspects of visitor experience including staffing, volunteers, visitor inquiries, retail, events , tours, safety, procedures Handle customer concerns and know when and to whom to escalate issues Oversee weekend part-time staff
Minimum Requirements:
Strong track record of providing excellent customer service, preferably in a museum or an arts environment Punctual and reliable Excellent interpersonal and management skills, combined with a team player approach, including a demonstrated ability to collaborate with volunteers Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently and perform multiple tasks Experience with building systems; HVAC experience preferred Skilled in deescalation in an environment akin to a museum Ability to be mobile through the museum for long periods of time, either standing and walking, or utilizing accessibility device Cultural competency and demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion Curiosity for, and interest in, American art and the M's permanent collection Desired Qualifications First Aid and CPR certification Emergency response or safety training Multi-lingual applicants with fluency in languages other than English are encouraged to apply To Apply Please send a n email describing your interest in this position and attach a resume to Bethany Whitehead, D eputy Director, at bwhitehead@mmaa.org .
