Job Description Update approved: August 2003 DEFINITION Under direction of the site administrator, to provide training and instruction to orchestra, band, and choral groups; to serve as an instructor and resource concerning instrumental and general music instruction; to provide instruction and training to choral groups in musicianship and ensemble singing; to plan and implement district standards, policies and procedures pertaining to the music program; and to do other related work as required.ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Personnel in this job classification may perform any combination of the essential duties shown below. This position description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, knowledge, or abilities associated with this classification, but is intended to accurately reflect the principle job elements.- Establishes a schedule of instructional activities for each assigned school.
- Provides instruction to beginning and continuing pupils.
- Organizes, prepares, and presents instrumental and choral music programs for performances.
- Maintains and makes minor adjustments and repairs to musical instruments.
- Assesses, monitors, and evaluates student progress; prepares grades for each pupil to coincide with the district reporting periods.
- Maintains an inventory of and is responsible for district musical equipment and materials assigned to the music program.
- Plans, organizes, and conducts instrumental music performances.
- Coaches individual pupils concerning their parts in the performances.
- Selects music to suit and to accommodate the talents and abilities of the instrumental group.
- Confers with, counsels, and advises site administrators concerning special music programs and performing arts activities.
- Advises and offers recommendations concerning appropriate music instructional materials.
- Participates in revising, updating, and incorporating creative and innovative trends into the district music and performing arts education programs.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Principles, theories, methods, techniques, and strategies pertaining to teaching and instruction of music to multi-age pupils; Methods, techniques, procedures, and strategies concerning the development and maintenance of an effective music program; Policies, procedures and standards pertaining to music and performing arts; Behavior management strategies and techniques; Performing arts groups and organizations within the community and the region; Current trends pertaining to instrumental music instructional processes and activities; Socio-economic and cultural differences of the school community.Ability to:
Provide specialized resource support and coordination of a creative and innovative instrumental music instruction program; Analyze and assess instrumental music program needs, and offer recommendations pertaining to program revisions, additions, or deletions; Communicate effectively in oral and written form; Assess and evaluate pupil performance as required; Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical requirements below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out the essential job functions.- Persons performing service in this position classification will exert 10 to 30 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
- This type of work is a sedentary position involving sitting a portion of the time, but may involve walking or standing for extended periods.
- Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far visual acuity, depth perception, providing oral information, the manual dexterity to operate business related equipment, and handle and work with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and skill is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and skill would be:EDUCATION
Possession of a Baccalaureate or higher degree from an accredited college or university.EXPERIENCE
Successful completion of student teaching experience at an accredited college or university.CREDENTIAL
A valid teaching credential issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing authorizing service as an elementary and secondary music teacher. Candidates applying for positions at federally funded schools must be fully credentialed.CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
