Mariachi Strings Instructor — Violin, Vihuela, Guitarra, Guitarrón (Classified or Certificated Position)
Position Type:
Full-time or Part-time (depending on program needs) Funded through Proposition 28 Arts Education Funding Job Summary The Mariachi Strings Instructor will build and launch a new mariachi program for students in grades 4-8. This instructor will teach beginner-level violin, vihuela, guitarra, and guitarrón, working with a group of approximately 10-25 students. The instructor will collaborate closely with the school's current Fine Arts teacher, who provides canto (vocal) instruction, to create a full canto + strings mariachi ensemble. The ideal candidate brings strong musicianship, a passion for mariachi traditions, and the soft skills needed to inspire and manage upper-elementary and middle-school students. Spanish fluency is preferred but not required. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Teach mariachi string instruments (violin, vihuela, guitarra, guitarrón) to beginner students in grades 4-8. Develop and implement lesson plans aligned with the Progressive Armonía Studies Curriculum (provided). Collaborate with the Fine Arts teacher to coordinate instruction and prepare students for ensemble performance. Prepare students for performances at school assemblies or end-of-trimester showcases. Maintain a positive, structured, and culturally respectful learning environment. Tune, maintain, and care for school-owned instruments and equipment. Communicate effectively with students, staff, and families. Support the long-term growth and sustainability of the school's mariachi program.

Preferred Qualifications:
Fluent Spanish speaker (not required). Experience performing or teaching mariachi music. Experience working with upper-elementary or middle-school students. Group leadership skills. Ability to inspire students and cultivate cultural pride through music.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of mariachi traditions, instrumentation, and ensemble structure. Ability to differentiate instruction for mixed-skill beginner groups. Ability to collaborate with school staff to build a cohesive program. Commitment to creating an inclusive, culturally affirming learning environment. Candidates may qualify under either pathway:
Classified Pathway:
Demonstrated proficiency in mariachi string instruments. Experience teaching or leading youth in music settings (school, community, or private instruction). Ability to follow curriculum and collaborate with certificated staff.
Certificated Pathway:
Valid California Single Subject Music Credential OR eligibility for an emergency permit.
