Primary Functions:
The Music Teacher is responsible for providing each student with varied opportunities to learn music in a classroom setting as creators, performers, observers, and listeners. This position also requires choral experience to conduct the fourth and fifth grade choral groups, along with programming and preparing students for several school and district-wide performances and assemblies throughout the year.
Qualifications:
Ability to establish and maintain good communication and working relationships with students, parents and staff members. Possess adequate vocal and keyboard skills necessary to teach and accompany traditional elementary songs and choral performance. Degree in Music from an accredited college or university. Hold appropriate Massachusetts Teaching License. Successful prior music teaching experience in a public school setting desired. Prior successful experience directing chorus activities desired. Knowledge of and willingness to incorporate audiation-based teaching techniques desired Beginning band experience a plus.
Major Responsibilities:
Teaches general assigned music and chorus classes to students as assigned by the principal. Creates and maintains a safe classroom learning environment. Evaluates student progress on a regular basis. Attends and participates in faculty meetings and Performing Arts departmental meetings. Works with other music teachers to establish a grade level music curriculum, based on audiation, that aligns with Mass. and District frameworks. Establishes and maintains cooperative relations with students, parents and other staff members. Serves as music resource person in job specific schools.
Other Responsibilities:
Assists in the selections of music, equipment, and other instructional materials. Maintains general music and band instrument inventories. Cooperates with other staff members in planning instructional goals, objectives, and school based events. Provides for own professional growth through an ongoing program of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences and/or advanced course-work at institutions of higher learning. Carries out any other appropriate responsibilities assigned.
