We are excited to offer a brand-new music program in a state-of-the-art school building with class sets of instruments, and we're seeking a dynamic and passionate educator to bring this vision to life. Position Summary Leahy Middle School is seeking a talented and enthusiastic Music Teacher to launch and lead a comprehensive music program for grades 5-8. The ideal candidate will be a strong educator with a passion for music, the skills to build a classroom culture of creativity and inclusiveness, and the ability to develop and grow a program that includes general music, instrumental instruction, and performance opportunities. This is a unique opportunity to shape a program from the ground up in a new, fully outfitted space. Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Design and implement a comprehensive, standards-based music curriculum aligned to the Massachusetts Arts Frameworks for middle school students.
- Provide engaging instruction in music theory, general music, performance, and instrumental technique using full class sets of instruments.
- Establish routines and structures for instrument use, storage, and care, ensuring all students can access and maintain instruments responsibly.
- Organize and direct student ensembles such as band, percussion group, choir, or other performing groups based on student interest and program goals.
- Produce and coordinate school concerts, showcases, and performances, including family and community events.
- Foster a positive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages student voice, creativity, and cultural expression.
- Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, including multilingual learners and students with disabilities.
- Collaborate with school leadership, staff, and families to promote student participation and enthusiasm for the music program.
- Integrate music instruction with other content areas (e.g., humanities, social studies) when applicable to support cross-curricular learning.
- Manage inventory of music materials and instruments and coordinate with administration on purchasing, repairs, and maintenance.
- Participate in school-based and district-wide professional development and contribute to the overall enrichment program at Leahy Middle School. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong knowledge of music theory, pedagogy, and performance techniques appropriate for middle school learners.
- Ability to teach multiple instruments and adapt instruction based on students' experience and proficiency levels.
- Classroom management skills suited for a hands-on, performance-based classroom environment.
- Commitment to equity and access in the arts, including culturally responsive repertoire and teaching practices.
- Experience with music technology tools (e.g., Noteflight, Soundtrap, GarageBand, etc.) is a plus.
- Ability to foster enthusiasm, creativity, and confidence in young musicians.
Qualifications & Requirements Licensure and Certifications:
- Valid Massachusetts teaching license in Music (K-12 or 5-12)
- SEI Endorsement or ESL license preferred
Education/Professional Background:
- Bachelor's degree in Music Education or a related field (Master's preferred)
- Minimum of 2-3 years of successful teaching or leading music programs, preferably in an urban or diverse setting
- Experience directing ensembles and organizing performances strongly preferred Preferred Qualifications
- Ability to play and teach multiple instruments, including brass, woodwind, percussion, or strings
- Prior experience launching or expanding a music program a strong plus
