Woodson School The Chorus Teacher is responsible for developing and leading the school's choral program, providing students with vocal instruction, music literacy, and a range of performance opportunities, including choral concerts and musical or stage-based productions that incorporate singing. This role fosters creativity, teamwork, and confidence through active participation in chorus while supporting the school's mission of cultivating excellence, character, and leadership among scholars. Instruction & Curriculum Plan and deliver engaging chorus instruction aligned with North Carolina Arts Education Standards. Teach vocal techniques, breath control, pitch accuracy, harmony, rhythm, and sight- reading. Develop lesson plans that support differentiated instruction for diverse learners. Introduce students to a variety of choral repertoire, including classical, contemporary, multicultural, and school-appropriate selections. Integrate music theory, performance skills, and historical/contextual understanding into instruction. Choral Program Development Organize and direct one or more school choirs or vocal ensembles. Select appropriate repertoire for rehearsals and performances. Prepare students for concerts, school events, assemblies, and community performances. Foster student engagement, teamwork, discipline, and musical growth. Performance & School Engagement Coordinate and lead student performances for school concerts, assemblies, and community events. Select and prepare students for a variety of performance opportunities, including choral concerts and musical or play-based productions that incorporate vocal performance. Collaborate with staff to support school-wide performances, programs, and cultural events. Work with other departments (e.g., theater, ELA, or enrichment staff) when applicable to produce integrated performances such as musicals or stage productions. Support initiatives that enhance school culture through the arts. Classroom Management & Culture Establish and maintain a structured, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment. Promote positive behavior, accountability, and active participation. Build strong relationships with students to support both academic and personal development. Assessment & Student Progress Assess student learning through performances, rehearsals, participation, and other evaluative methods. Maintain accurate records of student progress and attendance. Provide constructive feedback to support student growth. Collaboration & Professional Responsibilities Collaborate with school leadership and staff to support interdisciplinary learning opportunities. Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and school events. Communicate with parents/guardians regarding student progress and performance opportunities. Support the mission and vision of Carter G. Woodson School. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in music education or related field (required) Valid North Carolina teaching license in Music (preferred or required depending on charter requirements) Experience teaching chorus or directing vocal ensembles Strong knowledge of vocal pedagogy, choral instruction, and classroom management Ability to work effectively with diverse student populations
