Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Mentor & Teach:
Teach 5th grade general music and lead 6th-8th grade band instruction, including multiple ensembles such as beginner and intermediate/advanced bands. Prepare students for performances, assessments, and community events.
Instrumental Responsibilities:
Provide beginning and intermediate instruction across woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments. Support instrument selection, rentals, inventory, and maintenance, and collaborate on instrument acquisition and budget planning.
Instructional Excellence:
Conduct rehearsals, coach individual scholars, and implement culturally responsive and inclusive music instruction that supports performance goals and accommodates varying skill levels.
Data-Driven Instruction:
Align instruction to TEKS for Music and district/charter curriculum frameworks. Use formal and informal assessments to monitor scholar progress, adjust instruction, and maintain accurate gradebooks.
Technology & Classroom Management:
Use technology to enhance instruction and communication while implementing a consistent behavior management system aligned with restorative practices.
Professional Development & Collaboration:
Participate in school, district, and department meetings, professional development, and required training throughout the year.
Community & Culture Building:
Foster strong relationships with scholars, families, staff, and community partners, including Austin Soundwaves, and support campus performances and events. Demonstrate a "By any Means" mindset to ensure all scholars are on a path to being college-ready.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Education or Texas teaching certification in relevant subject area Commitment to Austin Achieve's mission, vision, and a "whatever it takes" mindset to support all scholars. Proven success teaching diverse learners, including emergent bilingual scholars. Proficiency in using data to inform instruction, strong classroom management skills, and the ability to collaborate on lesson and unit planning. Spanish fluency preferred; strong computer skills and a desire to integrate technology into teaching.
Physical Demands:
Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and sit on the floor for extended periods. Lift and carry up to 25 pounds regularly, with occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds. Demonstrate fine motor skills for activities like writing, cutting, and using technology. Maintain energy and stamina to engage actively with scholars throughout the day. Respond quickly to the physical needs of children in a classroom or outdoor setting. Maintain emotional control under stress. This job can only be performed in person and is not eligible for remote or off-site work.
