Join Our Team - Position Summary The Peterson School of Music seeks a piano instructor to provide structured Supplemental Piano instruction for students in the Conservatory program—advanced string and wind musicians developing foundational piano skills as part of a comprehensive, scholarship-based music curriculum. This role supports students' overall musical growth by integrating piano study as a core component of their training while fostering a focused, engaging learning environment. This is a part-time position, with compensation commensurate with experience.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Deliver structured, level-appropriate group piano instruction for Conservatory students during the fall and spring semesters (August-May). Teach Conservatory supplemental piano classes designed for advanced string and wind students, consisting of four progressive levels of 30-minute classes ( approximately 2 hours of instruction per week ). Maintain consistent weekly on-site availability at Gifted Music School to meet scheduling needs ( classes will likely take place on Friday evenings around 5:00-7:00 pm TBD) Apply effective group teaching strategies and incorporate supplemental piano pedagogy techniques to address varied skill levels, learning styles, and student needs. Foster a positive, structured classroom environment through strong classroom management, organization, and clear, professional communication with students, faculty, and staff. Collaborate with the Conservatory Director and the piano area to develop, implement, and refine a tiered curriculum, including establishing student assessment methods and progression benchmarks. Design and assign purposeful classwork and practice materials that reinforce lesson objectives, support skill development, and encourage consistent student progress.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in piano or related field Demonstrated evidence of effective teaching for beginning through advanced levels - minimum of 3 years of experience Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team Demonstrated English proficiency; Spanish or other language would be a strong asset. Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined above
PREFERENCES
Advanced degree in music (MM, MMA, or DMA) Experience in group piano instruction Active teaching career with a commitment to long-term engagement at the School Excellent communication and organizational skills Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching practice Strong understanding of comprehensive music education
ONBOARDING REQUIREMENT
For instructors without an established track record in piano pedagogy and student outcomes, the School requires 10 hours of lesson observation as part of onboarding: 8 hours observing a senior piano instructor 2 hours observing a senior Suzuki string instructor Teaching may begin concurrently with the observation period, with review by the Piano Department Chair.
