Job Description

The History and Political Science department is seeking an instructional assistant to evaluate correspondence, documents, and assessment materials prepared by students as part of their coursework. Grades and provides feedback for speeches, written assignments, essays, position papers, and article reviews, not including discussion postings. Monitors student progress and course participation on the discussion board, tracks missing assignments, and records scores in Canvas. Grades tests, assignments, and communication postings, discussion board, for participation, content, and form according to the instructor-supplied rubric. Maintains student interactions through email/phone and tutoring individuals, small groups, and large study sessions as scheduled by the instructor. Updates logistical documentation on Canvas (excluding course content). Performs other job-related duties, as assigned. Must be a current UVU Student All instructional assistants (both new and returning) will be required to attend an IA Orientation on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, from 5:30- 7:00 p.m. (over Teams).
Preferred Qualifications:
Extensive knowledge and familiarity with HIST1700, POLS1000 and other History and Political Science Courses Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software Skills in verbal and written communication to provide concrete and effective feedback Skills in evaluating speeches Skills in writing lesson plans Skills in instructing small groups Proficiency in APA style guides Ability to work independently, make decisions, follow verbal and written instructions, and meet deadlines Ability to assess student work according to faculty and general instructional standards Ability to maintain the confidentiality of student records
