Job Description

Non-Exempt The classroom teacher will establish a safe, healthy, learning environment that provides a variety of developmentally appropriate experiences that foster the social, emotional, physical and cognitive development of young children by following the Agency Plans, HighScope Pre-K Curriculum, the Agency Plans for Education and Disabilities, the Head Start Performance Standards, the NAEYC guidelines and the Office of Children and Family Services Day Care Regulations.   • Set-up and arrange a classroom that provides interest, movement, encourages literacy through a print rich environment, and that supports opportunities that encourage curiosity, exploration and problem solving.
  • Complete educational and behavioral screenings within 45 days of the child's entry to the program.
  • Write anecdotal notes that show growth and development in the Head Start Child and Early Learning Framework.
  • Complete 3 High Scope Pre - K GOLD assessments per school year.
  • Conduct 2 home visits and 3 parent conferences.
  • Write, post, and implement a daily / weekly lesson plan that fosters educational growth and is supportive of individual students' needs.
  • Incorporate HSOR school readiness goals in the plans and all classroom activities.
  • Promote the creative process through play, music and movement, drama and literature, and art.
  • Promote child and family literacy, English language development.
  • Promote good health and nutrition.
  • Infuse multicultural activities and literature into curriculum planning.
  • Assist with maintaining and updating classroom files / binder to follow HSOR regulations and for NAEYC accreditation.
  • Keep an updated ASPIRE profile at all times. Job Knowledge and Skills
  • Have knowledge of HSOR School Readiness / Family Goals
  • Be knowledgeable of Early Childhood Development (Birth to 5 years old).
  • Have a working knowledge of the High Scope Pre-K Curriculum, the Agency Plans, GOLD, developmental and behavioral screening tools, the Head Start Performance Standards, Day Care regulations and NAEYC guidelines.
  • Must be computer literate in Microsoft office (EXCEL, Access, etc.)
  • Be familiar, able to use, input information in current tracking system (Child Plus).
  • Update and enhance teaching skills by attending a minimum of 15 hours of training per year.
  • Complete MAT training / retain MAT certification
  • Complete CPR and First Aid class and attend other age appropriate health and safety trainings yearly.
  • Demonstrate competency to provide effective and nurturing teacher-child interactions, plan and implement learning experiences that ensure effective curriculum implementation and use of assessment and promote children's progress across the standards described in the
Head Start Early Learning Outcomes Framework:
Ages Birth to Five and applicable state early learning and development standards, including for children with disabilities and dual language learners, as appropriate. Initiative
  • Establish regular team meetings with the assistants and aides to discuss daily and weekly lesson plans and the opportunities for improving classroom interactions.
  • Prepare of and participate in Child Study meetings as needed.
  • Work closely assistants, aides, foster grandparents, volunteers and substitutes during classroom interactions.
  • Keep good classroom records: including observations and anecdotes, collections of student works, completion of the COR assessment three times per year, and records of parent conferences.
  • Initiate / meet goals of your annual professional development plan.
  • Be responsive to the needs of the individual children and or groups of children in the class.
  • Initiate / follow up on activities with children and meetings with families as need.
  • Establish effective communication skills between teacher / children, teacher / parents, teacher and coworkers. Interpersonal Skills
  • Respect and accept children's individual differences and capabilities.
  • Provide a nurturing environment that promotes, independence, school readiness and English language development.
  • Listen to and respond positively to children and speak to them at eye level.
  • Use positive classroom disciplinary techniques.
  • Attend parent meeting(s) as assigned and provide feedback from each classroom.
  • Encourage parents to become involved in the program, to volunteer and share a talent
  • Accept positive and constructive criticism from the designated supervisor.
  • Work with a variety of staff and assist with conflict resolution as needed.
  • Work cooperatively with all staff including health and nutrition, special education and family and community partnership.
  • Act as a role model for children and staff by using and encouraging positive interactions. Courtesy and mutual respect is expected.
  • Represent HSOR at Head Start related internal and or community meetings as requested. Reliability
  • Keep good classroom records: including observations and anecdotes, collections of children's works, assessments, and records of parent conferences.
  • Complete 2 home visits and 2 parent conferences per school year and encourage parents to become involved in the program, to volunteer and /or share a talent.
  • Complete screenings and assessments by identified deadlines.
  • Know / follow the centers procedures for handling emergencies. (i.e. fire, accidents, and early dismissal)
  • Arrange and clear all trips with the supervisor.
  • Report to a supervisor / designee when you leave and upon return to the classroom. (walks /trips)
  • Be prompt for work and follow policies related to absences, lateness and/or illness.
  • Follow the Head Start Code of Conduct and confidentiality policy.
  • Attend education, teacher and staff meetings.
  • Follow guidelines for the Office of Children and Family Services Day Care Regulations
  • Participate in program evaluations and activities.
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor
Requirements:
  • Bachelor Degree/Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education preferred
  • Bachelor Degree in Education with ECE concentration
  • Bachelor Degree in unrelated area with at least 18 credits in ECE and early childhood experience
  • NYS Provisional or Permanent Teacher Certification or NYS Initial Certificate B-2 (Required for UPK classes)
  • Good writing and communication skills
  • Computer skills a plus
  • Valid NYS Driver's License may be required for position
