Position Summary Individual colleges within the Community College system provide child development centers, offering childcare, child development, nutrition and related services for the children of students, staff and citizens of communities in their respective service areas. The colleges also offer academic programs in early childhood education. The child development centers provide the collateral function of serving as laboratories for practical experience by early childhood education students. The Child Development Teacher plans and carries out learning activities for children in a college child development center as well as assisting early childhood education students of the Community College in gaining practical teaching experience as part of their curriculum. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Under the direction of the Director of Child Development Center or other administrator, the Child Development Teacher is accountable for contributing to the development and care of children enrolled in the College's Child Laboratory School through effective performance in these essential functional areas: Key responsibilities include: Teaching the Laboratory School children Accountable for providing age and developmentally appropriate learning experiences for assigned children in the College's Laboratory School. Overseeing student teachers' academic lab experience. Accountable for contributing to the practical experience of the College's early childhood education students. Parent communications. Accountable for communicating with parents about their children's progress as well as about the services of the Laboratory School Participating in Center administration. Accountable for contributing to the effective management of the Laboratory School by participating in its administration.
Additional responsibilities include:
Attendance and participation at convocation and commencement ceremonies Service on assigned committees and task forces Attendance and participation at committee, staff, informational and professional meetings which may occur during evenings and weekends. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education or an appropriately related field together with two (2) or more years of experience in a related field; or a combination of education, training and experience which would lead to the competencies required for successful performance of the position's essential duties.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Early childhood education Child development and learning principles and applications Childcare administration Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, including individuals with disabilities Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams)
Special Requirements:
Hold a valid First Aid, CPR, and Medication Administration Certificates approved by Connecticut Office of Early Childhood Division of Licensing; Connecticut Office of Early Childhood Health & Safety Training, Mandated Reporter Training. Incumbents must be fingerprinted through the Connecticut Office of Early Childhood and approved to work in a childcare setting. Preferred Qualifications Experience with the Connecticut Early Learning and Development Standards and the Connecticut Documentation and Observation for Teaching Systems. Experience with NAEYC Accreditation and State of CT Early Childhood Education licensing. Experience within a laboratory school and/or with preservice teachers. Knowledge of, or experience with, the Project Approach and/or the Developmental Interaction Approach. Proven experience implementing and assessing effective classroom and behavior management strategies. Experience supporting children with diverse abilities, learning styles, and developmental needs.
