Job Description

Position Title:
Preschool Lead Teacher Reports To:
Preschool Director Position Summary The Lead Preschool Teacher is responsible for creating and maintaining a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate classroom environment for young children. The Lead Teacher plans and implements engaging learning activities that support children's social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development while incorporating the values and mission of the church preschool. The Lead Teacher supervises the classroom and works closely with the Teacher Assistant to ensure a positive and supportive learning environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Plan and implement developmentally appropriate curriculum Maintain a safe, nurturing classroom environment Supervise and collaborate with assistants Communicate professionally with families through approved channels Maintain required documentation and assessment Maintain classroom cleanliness and safety Model Christian values and positive guidance Lead Teacher Qualifications Policy This policy establishes the minimum qualifications required for Lead Teachers (Program Leaders) at BUMP Preschool to ensure high-quality instruction, safe environments, and compliance with Virginia childcare licensing standards. I. Minimum Age and Education Requirement Lead Teachers must: Be at least 18 years of age Have completed a high school diploma or equivalent In addition, Lead Teachers must meet one (1) of the following qualification pathways: II.
Education and Experience Pathways Option A:
Degree Path An endorsement or bachelor's degree in a child-related field, such as (but not limited to): Early Childhood Education Elementary Education Nursing Recreation From an accredited college or university
Option B:
Early Childhood Certificate Path At least three (3) months of programmatic experience, AND one of the following: 1. Early Childhood Certificate A one-year early childhood certificate program consisting of at least 30 semester hours 2. Child Development Credential A child development credential issued by an organization listed in § 22.1-289.048 of the Code of Virginia 3. Montessori Credential A teaching diploma from a nationally or internationally recognized Montessori organization
Option C:
Experience-Based Path At least six (6) months of supervised programmatic experience working with children in a group setting III. Required Training Lead Teachers must complete required training related to the care of children as follows: Initial Training Requirement Within six (6) months before or one (1) month after employment or promotion, the Lead Teacher must complete at least 12 hours of training, including: Child development Playground safety Health and safety practices Prevention and reporting of child abuse and neglect Training may be completed on-site while not supervising children. IV. Compliance All Lead Teachers must maintain documentation of education, experience, and completed training. Records must be kept in the file and available for licensing review. All staff members are expected to: Collaborate effectively with coworkers and leadership Communicate clearly and respectfully Support program decisions and classroom transitions Maintain a team-oriented approach to problem-solving Model Christian values in professional
