Commensurate with experience — to be discussed with selected candidate Scope of Services Hartford Public Library's The American Place seeks a part-time Financial & Digital Literacy Instructor to deliver financial literacy instruction — and, where applicable, integrated digital literacy support — through its Digital Justice Initiative, a grant-funded program serving justice-impacted individuals, returning citizens, and their families. Financial literacy expertise is required. Candidates able to integrate digital literacy instruction connected to financial capability are strongly preferred. Position Overview Serve as an independent contractor delivering dynamic, motivational instruction within a structured 6-week cohort model serving justice-impacted populations, including formerly incarcerated adults, residents of halfway houses, returning citizens and their families, and individuals engaged in Hartford-based reentry pathways. Core Responsibilities Deliver engaging financial literacy instruction through single-session and multi-session formats within the 6-week cohort model Facilitate interactive workshops using FDIC Money Smart and other HPL-approved curricula Cover core topics including budgeting and savings, banking access and online banking, credit building and repair, fraud and identity theft prevention, consumer protection, and avoiding predatory financial products Adapt instruction to varying literacy levels, educational backgrounds, and life experiences Support participants in setting practical goals such as budgeting, opening bank accounts, and reestablishing credit Facilitate sessions in English; multilingual instruction in Spanish, Portuguese, or other common Hartford-area languages strongly preferred
Note:
All instructional materials and curricula are provided by Hartford Public Library. Expanded Scope — Strongly Preferred Candidates able to deliver aligned digital literacy instruction may be considered for expanded hours and responsibilities, including: Email setup and basic online communication Online safety and fraud prevention Navigating online and mobile banking platforms Accessing benefits, appointments, and services online Basic computer and mobile device use to support financial access and reentry success Experience with Northstar Digital Literacy or similar adult learning curricula is preferred. The right candidate may have the opportunity to serve as the sole instructor for both program components. Community Engagement & Collaboration Deliver trauma-informed, culturally competent instruction tailored to justice-impacted adults Conduct education on the benefits of mainstream banking over high-cost alternative services Collaborate with The American Place staff, branch staff, and community partners Support attendance tracking, pre- and post-program surveys, and skill-based outcome reporting Track participant milestones such as email creation, budgeting, and online banking use Encourage continued engagement with Hartford Public Library services Essential Qualifications Consistent weekday daytime availability required 3-5 years in financial literacy education, financial services, or community financial empowerment Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience Strong facilitation skills with diverse adult learners Experience working with justice-impacted, reentry, or marginalized populations Cultural competency and trauma-informed approach Collaborative team player Reliable transportation within the Hartford area Fluency in English Preferred Qualifications Ability to integrate digital literacy with financial instruction Experience with returning citizens or formal reentry programs Lived experience as a returning citizen or close personal connection to reentry communities Spanish fluency preferred; other Hartford-area languages valued Financial education certifications (NFEC, AFCPE, or equivalent) Experience with FDIC Money Smart, Northstar Digital Literacy, or similar curricula Hartford-area community or reentry networks
