The Malden Public Schools (MPS) is a richly diverse school district located within the Greater Boston area and accessible by the MBTA orange line train. Malden's student body comprises approximately 6,800 students who represent 59 different countries and speak 67 different languages. We have 1 early learning center, 5 K-8 schools, and 1 high school. Description:
The Literacy Assistant will provide reading and writing instruction to an identified at-risk population. The Literacy Assistant will work with the Title I literacy coaches, reading specialists, and the classroom teachers to plan and implement literacy instruction that meets the specific needs of large groups, small groups, and/or individual students.
Responsibilities:
Provide intervention services to at-risk children in reading and writing in order to accelerate their literacy skills. Participate with the literacy coaches, reading specialists, and the classroom teachers to plan and implement 'just-in-time' literacy support in the five pillars of literacy (phonological awareness, Phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension). Conduct individual diagnostic testing of students and analyze results with the school's literacy coach and grade-level teams. Conduct progress monitoring of students identified as 'at-risk' and input results into the DIBELS database system. Collaborate regularly with the literacy coaches and classroom teachers to share observations of student performance and progress. Participate in training sessions provided onsite by the Title I grant. Input benchmark literacy data using the DIBELS database system to support school wide analysis of data. Attend data meetings and individual student meetings as necessary. Support classes in literacy instruction as teachers attend professional development and professional learning communities. Participate in other literacy-related tasks as determined by the Director of Title I and school-based principal.
Must be able to:
Be mobile and move from one group of students to another Work respectfully with students, teachers, and peers Be or be willing to get trained in literacy interventions and in administering the DIBELS assessment Input data into the DIBELS database system Be punctual and follow a tight schedule Answer emails through the maldenps.org system Navigate basic computer platforms Complete a timesheet accurately
Minimum Requirements:
Experience working with students Bachelor's degree Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
