Aug 19, 2026 Job Description Reading Specialist (Grades 6-12-General Education & Special Education) This position is anticipated pending budget approval. Advanced Math and Science Academy Charter School (AMSA) Marlborough, Massachusetts Position Summary The Reading Specialist (Grades 6-12) is responsible for supporting students in developing strong literacy skills across content areas, with a focus on students requiring targeted and intensive reading intervention. This role includes delivering evidence-based instruction, including structured literacy approaches such as the Wilson Reading System, and collaborating with faculty to strengthen literacy practices schoolwide. The Reading Specialist plays a critical role in ensuring equitable access to rigorous curriculum by helping students build the foundational reading and writing skills necessary for success in all disciplines. The Reading Specialist will be in the Special Education Department. Key Responsibilities Instruction & Intervention
  • Provide direct, research-based reading instruction to students in grades 6-12, individually and in small groups
  • Implement structured literacy programs, including the Wilson Reading System, with fidelity
  • Design and deliver targeted interventions for students identified through MTSS and special education processes
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, including students with disabilities and English learners
  • Support students in developing decoding, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills Assessment & Data Analysis
  • Administer and interpret diagnostic and progress monitoring assessments
  • Use data to inform instructional decisions and adjust interventions
  • Collaborate with teachers and leadership to analyze student performance trends
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress and intervention outcomes Collaboration & Coaching
  • Partner with general education teachers to integrate literacy strategies across content areas
  • Serve as a resource to staff on evidence-based literacy practices and interventions
  • Participate in MTSS teams, IEP meetings, and student support planning
  • Provide professional development and coaching related to adolescent literacy Program Development
  • Support the development and implementation of a comprehensive Tiered literacy support system
  • Contribute to schoolwide literacy initiatives aligned with AMSA's mission of academic excellence
  • Stay current on best practices in adolescent literacy and structured literacy approaches Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree in Reading, Literacy, Special Education, or related field preferred
  • Massachusetts licensure as a Reading Specialist and/or Special Education Teacher preferred
  • MTEL in Communication and Literacy and MTEL in Reading Required within the first year of employment
  • Certification in Wilson Reading System Level I and Level II required OR willingness to obtain certification (fully funded by AMSA)
  • Experience working with middle and/or high school students
  • Strong knowledge of structured literacy and evidence-based reading interventions
  • Demonstrated ability to use data to drive instruction and intervention
  • Familiarity with the IEP Process & Goal Writing
  • Excellent collaboration, communication, and organizational skills Salary negotiable pending years of experience and in accordance with the CBA.
