Brogden Primary Elementary Reading Specialist Wayne County Public Schools Job Description The Elementary Reading Specialist serves as an instructional leader who supports the development of literacy skills for all students. The Reading Specialist works collaboratively with teachers, administrators, students, and families to improve reading achievement through assessment, intervention, coaching, and professional development. This position focuses on implementing evidence-based literacy practices aligned with district and state standards to ensure student success in reading. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Student Support and Intervention Provide targeted reading instruction and interventions to students who are performing below grade level. Assess students' literacy strengths and areas of need using formal and informal assessments. Develop and implement individualized reading plans. Monitor student progress and adjust interventions based on data. Support students in developing phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills. Collaborate with classroom teachers to identify students needing additional literacy support. Assist with the implementation of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS). Instructional Leadership Serve as a literacy resource for teachers and staff. Model effective reading instruction and research-based literacy strategies. Coach teachers in the implementation of best practices in reading instruction. Assist teachers in analyzing student performance data to inform instruction. Support the implementation of district literacy initiatives and curriculum programs. Facilitate collaborative planning sessions focused on literacy instruction. Assessment and Data Analysis Coordinate and administer literacy screening and diagnostic assessments. Analyze student achievement data to identify trends and instructional needs. Maintain accurate records of student progress and intervention outcomes. Assist school leadership teams in using literacy data to improve instructional practices. Prepare reports and documentation related to student reading achievement. Professional Development Plan and deliver professional learning opportunities related to literacy instruction. Stay current with literacy research, instructional strategies, and educational trends. Support new teachers in developing effective reading instruction practices. Participate in school improvement initiatives related to literacy achievement. Additional Responsibilities Assist with school improvement planning related to literacy goals. Maintain confidentiality of student records and information. Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or district administration. Promote a positive learning environment that supports student growth and achievement. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Education required Successful teaching experience in elementary education. Strong knowledge of literacy development, assessment, and intervention strategies. Experience analyzing student data and using data to drive instruction. Excellent communication, collaboration, and leadership skills. Knowledge of MTSS, evidence-based literacy practices, and state literacy standards. Physical Requirements Ability to work with students in classroom and small-group settings. Ability to lift instructional materials and equipment as needed. Ability to sit, stand, walk, and move throughout the school day.
