POSITION SUMMARY
The NSI assists the Senior Naval Science Instructor (SNSI) in managing and implementing the overall Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Core (NJROTC) unit program according to national, state, and district standards. The NSI is responsible for implementing the Navy's national education curriculum and program requirements to include the preparation, planning, coordination, and supervision of all co-curricular service learning, special activities or events (military ball, drill meets, honor guards, and other extra-curricular activities), as well as promoting the cadets' intellectual, social, patriotic, character education, and physical growth.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND DUTIES
Complies with State and Federal regulations and Calvert County Public Schools' policies and procedures.
Prepares and updates lesson plans and delivers instruction of the four-year Naval Science curriculum.
Instructs in military drill.
Counsels students about the NJROTC program.
Requires NJROTC cadets to conduct themselves in a military manner at all times when under naval supervision.
Ensures cadets observe the chain-of-command.
Establishes positive rapport with students, staff, parents, and community members.
Assesses unit progress to assure NJROTC program objectives are met.
Requisitions all government-furnished equipment (uniforms, training aids, books, drill and air rifles, organizational equipment, etc.).
Arranges for cleaning and tailoring of uniforms.
Controls inventory of all government furnished equipment and materials (including annual wall-to-wall inventory).
Performs simple preventative maintenance of training aids and devices.
Ensures proper physical security of all government furnished equipment and materials.
Plans extracurricular activities for the NJROTC unit (including color and honor guard ceremonies, drill and rifle teams competitive meets, fields trips, basic leadership training camps, ship cruises, etc.).
Accompanies the unit to week-end competitions and is available on occasional evenings to lead unit participation in various school and community events.
Prepares periodic reports on program administration and logistics.
Keeps current with new developments and organizations within the Navy.
Attends Navy-sponsored training to keep abreast of current requirements of program management.
Takes courses of instruction and seeks professional development opportunities to enhance teaching abilities.
Makes annual presentations about the NJROTC program to students attending feeder schools for the purpose of recruiting new cadets to the program.
Informs students, parents, and community members of NJROTC activities and achievements through school publications as well as local news media.
Serves on routine committees or extracurricular duties normally performed by and rotated equitably among other faculty members.
Ensures safety and well being of cadets is observed at all times during cadets' participation in NJROTC activities.
Ensures non-discriminatory practices are applied and take immediate corrective action if/when necessary.
Thinks, concentrates, and interacts positively with others.
Comes to work promptly every day.
Works under stress and meets all deadlines.

PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL CONDITIONS/DEMANDS

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Twelve (12) month position with salary determined by the Department of Navy. An additional annual stipend is included for work beyond the normal school day. All employees are encouraged to have automatic payroll deposit.
EVALUATION
Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the policy on evaluation as established by the Calvert County Public Schools.

References must be directly related to educational experience and must include immediate supervisor.
State law requires that anyone hired after October 1, 1986, who will have contact with school children, must be fingerprinted and submit to a criminal background investigation. Federal law requires that a new employee must complete the Employment Eligibility Verification (Form I-9) in person before beginning employment. Employment is conditional upon successful completion of a drug screen. Current employees of the Calvert County Public Schools are exempt from these requirements.
