Level UP Enrichment has spent the last several years bringing the joy of chess to students all over San Diego County, and we are currently hiring instructors for our Fall 2026 season! This is a great opportunity for students, part-time workers, teachers, or anyone looking to supplement their income while making a positive impact with kids. Compensation & Benefits Hourly Rate:
$26.00 - $30.00 per hour (Pay rate is based on experience, qualifications, and abilities)
Guaranteed Class Minimum:
Pay averages around $40 per class, as we always pay for a minimum of 1.5 hours to account for your setup and dismissal time!
Perks:
Paid training, pre-written curriculum, and a gas bonus for any school assignments located over 15 miles from your starting location!
CRITICAL SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS
Availability:
Applicants must be available a minimum of 3 days per week.
Hours:
Must be available between 12:00 PM - 5:00 PM on your working days.
Note:
Our top instructors work up to 5 days a week, 1.5-3 hours per day! A Day on the Job Our classes typically run in the afternoon, making this a great fit for anyone looking for meaningful supplemental income. You'll travel to assigned schools near your area and teach exciting chess programs using our structured curriculum and provided materials. You bring the energy—we provide the chess lesson plans and boards! Essential Physical & Classroom Requirements This position requires employees to safely supervise and lead groups of children in an active, fast-paced enrichment setting. To ensure student safety and program quality, employees must be able to perform the following essential job functions, with or without reasonable accommodation:
Physical Stamina & Lifting:
Safely lift, carry, and maneuver up to 40 pounds of program materials (including heavy chess set bags and demo boards) regularly.
Logistics & Transport:
Securely transport and manage bulky program supplies—including up to two large storage containers and/or heavy supply crates—using your personal vehicle to and from assigned school sites.
Rapid Response & Mobility:
Move quickly, maintain high physical energy, and react immediately and safely to navigate indoor/outdoor school spaces, including responding promptly and calmly during an emergency.
Solo Group Management:
Independently supervise and maintain classroom control of up to 20 students in grades 1-5, or up to 10 kindergarten/pre-kindergarten students. You must be comfortable acting as the sole adult supervising the group.
Effective Communication:
Clearly and professionally communicate with students, families, school staff, and Level UP leadership.
Stress Tolerance & Classroom Culture:
Maintain an environment that balances uncompromising safety, high-energy fun, and active learning in a high-responsibility, loud, and active environment. Qualifications
A ROCKSTAR
attitude, especially around students in grades K-6. A solid understanding of chess terms and principles, including: Castling, Pin, Fork, Skewer, En Passant, Stalemate, Checkmate, and Opening Principles (Chess.com is a great resource to brush up!). A genuine passion for teaching and a love of learning. Reliable personal transportation (capable of transporting supply bins) and a working smartphone. Strict availability for a minimum of 3 days per week between 12:00 PM - 5:00 PM. Ability to pass a TB test and background check/fingerprinting post-offer.
Bonus Skills:
Experience assisting, coaching, or teaching in a formal classroom, chess club, or camp setting. Educational background or interest in child development, education, or psychology.
