While applications are open now, coaching positions begin in September and continue throughout the school year. We work with bright, motivated students in grades 4-10, helping them develop confidence, public speaking skills, critical thinking, and leadership through speech and debate. Many of our students are new to debate when they start. Our goal is not only to help students succeed competitively, but also to create a supportive environment where they can become stronger communicators and more confident thinkers. As a Lumos coach, you'll have the opportunity to make a lasting impact on students while working alongside a passionate team of educators. What You'll Do Teach small-group Public Forum debate classes during weekday afternoons and evenings Help students develop argumentation, public speaking, research, and critical thinking skills Build strong relationships with students and support their growth throughout the semester Guide students through speechwriting, case construction, rebuttal strategy, and presentation skills Coach students preparing for local debate tournaments Collaborate with fellow instructors to deliver engaging lessons and a positive classroom experience Assist with occasional tournaments, workshops, information sessions, and community events Qualifications Bachelor's degree (or currently pursuing one) Experience competing in or coaching debate (Public Forum preferred, but Lincoln-Douglas, Parliamentary, Policy, and other formats are welcome) Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills Enthusiasm for working with elementary, middle, and high school students Ability to create an engaging and supportive learning environment Preferred Qualifications Prior teaching, tutoring, coaching, or mentoring experience Experience working with middle school or high school debate teams Background in education, public speaking, communication, political science, or related fields Why Work at Lumos?
