Job Description

Category Schools - Special Education Teacher Job Type Contract Step into a rewarding contract opportunity supporting students and schools in a uniquely Alaskan setting for the 2026-2027 school year. Multiple positions are available for passionate Special Education Teachers dedicated to making a lasting difference in the lives of students with intensive needs, as well as an exciting dual-role (special education/general education) for those who value variety in their teaching experience.
Current openings include:
Two secondary intensive needs teaching assignments (grades 9-post secondary, self-contained, caseload ~10) One middle school intensive needs role (grades 6-8, self-contained, caseload ~10) One unique half-time special education/half-time general education position in an elementary multi-grade classroom at a remote, fly-in school—ideal for educators craving adventure and community impact
Qualifications:
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Special Education or closely related field Valid Alaska Teaching Certification (or eligibility to obtain) Previous experience educating students with intensive needs highly desirable Strong classroom management and communication skills Flexibility and a collaborative mindset are essential, especially for roles with variable or combined responsibilities Experience working in self-contained and inclusive settings preferred
Responsibilities:
Design and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students with a range of abilities Deliver engaging, individualized instruction in both self-contained and general education environments Collaborate closely with fellow educators, support staff, families, and related service providers Foster supportive, inclusive classroom communities that promote growth and achievement for all learners Track progress, maintain documentation, and participate in relevant meetings Take the next step in your education career while experiencing the unmatched beauty and close-knit school communities of Alaska.
