Full Job Description Special Education Teacher Bessemer City School System Job Title:
Special Education Teacher Reports to: School Principal Job Goals; The provision of effective instructional support services which create optimal educational opportunities for students.
Preferred Qualifications:
Valid Alabama Teacher's Certificate with endorsement in Special Education. Master's degree in specific exceptionality. Experience in full range of severity levels and service deliver models (particularly autism). Team leadership experience. Knowledge of effective strategies for academic and behavior intervention. Word processing/computer experience and knowledge of assistive technology devices for students with special needs.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Assesses student needs and develops an individual education program (IEP/504) plan for students with disabilities; monitors and updates IEPs as needed. Plans appropriate instruction for each student; integrates individual student goals/ objectives into classroom plans. Trains and supervises teacher assistants for students with disabilities. Cooperates with other professionals to coordinate services for students. Teaches students, utilizing current effective-teaching research. Employs effective educational instruction and behavior management techniques that foster good self-concept and independence in learning. Assists teachers with the implementation of appropriate classroom accommodations/modifications. Assists individual students and/or teachers with the use of assistive technology/ adaptive devices. Assists with coordination of the local school process for the identification and referral of students for special education services. Maintains/ monitors records of students served by the instructional support team. Serves as a team member in determining student accommodations, referral, eligibility, placement, and individual program development. Monitors all evaluation requirements and submits referral/documentation to the central office. Complies with local, state, and federal regulations regarding Special Education records, reports, and services. Cooperates with teachers, counselors, therapists, and other school personnel in the provision of effective educational services to students. Provides information, consultation and assistance to regular classroom teachers. Maintains frequent and substantive communication with parents. Cooperates in all teacher regulations and responsibilities in the local school. Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal.
Terms of Employment:
Salary and work year to be established by the Board. Salary in adherence and compliance with the approved salary schedule.
