Aug 3, 2026 Job Description Position Summary The Special Education Teacher for Students with Significant Needs is responsible for providing specialized instruction, individualized supports, and evidence-based interventions to students with significant cognitive, developmental, behavioral, communication, and/or physical disabilities. The teacher develops and implements individualized education programs (IEPs), collaborates with families and school personnel, and ensures students receive access to the least restrictive environment while promoting academic, functional, social, and life skills development. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Instruction and Student Support Provide direct instruction aligned with students' IEP goals and Arkansas Academic Standards. Design and implement individualized lessons targeting academic, communication, behavioral, social-emotional, adaptive, and functional life skills. Utilize evidence-based instructional strategies, assistive technology, and specialized curriculum materials. Differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning, sensory, physical, and behavioral needs. Facilitate opportunities for inclusion and participation in general education settings when appropriate. Develop and implement positive behavior intervention strategies and behavior support plans. Support student independence in self-help, daily living, and transition-related skills. Individualized Education Program (IEP) Management Develop, maintain, and implement compliant IEPs for assigned students. Monitor student progress toward IEP goals and objectives. Collect and analyze data to inform instructional decisions and document progress. Prepare progress reports and maintain accurate special education records. Coordinate and participate in annual reviews, reevaluations, and eligibility meetings. Collaboration and Communication Collaborate with general education teachers, related service providers, and support staff to ensure student success. Work closely with speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, school psychologists, and behavior specialists. Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress and educational programming. Provide training and guidance to paraprofessionals assigned to the classroom. Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and professional learning communities. Classroom Environment Establish a safe, structured, and supportive learning environment. Implement classroom management practices that promote student engagement and independence. Maintain compliance with health, safety, and student confidentiality requirements. Supervise students during classroom, community-based, and school-wide activities. Compliance and Professional Responsibilities Ensure compliance with IDEA, Section 504, Arkansas Department of Education regulations, and district policies. Maintain confidentiality of student records and information. Attend required professional development and maintain appropriate licensure. Perform other duties as assigned by administration. Qualifications Required Valid Arkansas teaching license with Special Education certification. Knowledge of special education laws, procedures, and compliance requirements. Experience working with students with significant cognitive, developmental, physical, or behavioral disabilities. Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills. Preferred Experience with functional curriculum and life skills instruction. Training in behavior intervention, de-escalation strategies, and autism supports. Experience using assistive technology and augmentative communication systems. Experience supervising paraprofessionals. Physical Requirements Ability to assist students with mobility, positioning, transfers, and personal care needs as required. Ability to lift, bend, stoop, and perform duties associated with supporting students with significant physical needs. Ability to respond appropriately during behavioral or medical emergencies. Performance Expectations The Special Education Teacher will: Demonstrate a commitment to high expectations and meaningful outcomes for students with significant needs. Foster student growth in academic, social, communication, and independent living skills. Maintain compliance with all special education requirements. Build positive relationships with students, families, and staff. Contribute to a collaborative and inclusive school culture.
