Electronic (Using your CalCareer Account) Job Description and Duties The Teacher, State Hospitals (Severely Handicapped-Developmentally Disabled-Safety) serves eligible students with an individualized education program (IEP) by providing specially designed instruction to meet the unique needs of the student. The Teacher, State Hospitals (Severely Handicapped-Developmentally Disabled) is responsible for participating in the special education process, engaging with adult education and vocational education instructors, and other paraprofessionals (i.e., Psychiatric Technician trainers, Psychiatric Technician Assistants), and other staff assigned to assist with educational instruction and support to students, to ensure the IEP is implemented. The Teacher, State Hospitals (Severely Handicapped-Developmentally Disabled) uses the Specialist Education Information System (SEIS) web-based system or Department of Developmental Services (DDS) IEP forms if appropriate to write IEPs, monitor service tracking (goals and objectives), and provide needed information to the IEP Coordinator and/or Program Director for reporting special education data to the DDS Headquarters (i.e., attendance). The position is responsible for engaging with other credentialed education teachers and vocational education instructors to collaborate on the selection and implementation of instructional materials and the use of data to inform instruction. Provides and directs individualized and group-oriented education, transition, and vocational skills training related to the educational program as written in individuals' IEP and their Individual Program Plan (IPP). Adheres to and implements all facility policies and procedures. Must Possess and maintain a valid Education Specialist Teaching Credential issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) which authorizes the holder to teach the specialty areas (i.e., Mild to Moderate Support Needs; Extensive Support Needs; etc.) named on the credential in courses organized primarily for adults. CTC State issued credential must be in good standing.
Note:
The term "students" in this duty statement refers to individuals that are enrolled in Special Education classes and/or with Porterville Adult School. Effective July 1, 2025, State employees are subject to a salary reduction of three (3) percent in exchange for five (5) hours per month of Personal Leave. Temporary state housing may be available for those relocating to fill hard to recruit positions. Housing assignments and rates will be determined in accordance with Department policy, operational priorities, and applicable labor agreements. TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must possess and maintain sufficient strength, agility, endurance, and sensory ability to perform the duties contained within the duty statement. This position has ongoing responsibility for the protection and safeguarding of the public and property, and regular and substantial contact with forensic individuals. As a condition of employment, incumbents are required to and capable of responding to emergency situations and provide a level of service to the public such that the safety of the public and of property is not jeopardized. Employees will be required to perform the following essential functions: must be able to lift 50 pounds without assistance; must be able to participate in containments, interventions, or restraints in emergency situations; must have the ability to work extended hours if so needed.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS
 The Teacher, State Hospitals (Severely Handicapped-Developmentally Disabled-Safety) used by the Department of Developmental Services, Porterville Developmental Center (PDC) is responsible for maintaining order and supervising the conduct of individuals; maintaining the safety of persons and property; and delivering classroom instruction to ensure the achievement of students with an IEP using evidence-based practices and recognized instructional strategies to create a learning environment for students to achieve their learning goals. The Teacher, State Hospitals (Severely Handicapped-Developmentally Disabled-Safety) incorporates activities and instruction designed to build appropriate social emotional skills; and support the students as they develop academic proficiency. Potential exposure to communicable diseases, blood-borne pathogens, and other conditions common to a clinical nursing environment. Ensures the safety of public, staff, and forensic individuals, which may include, but not limited to: escorting forensic individuals in the facility; distributing and accounting for all training equipment and supplies to prevent their use as weapons; inspecting facilities to identify security breaches that could lead to the escape of forensic individual; and observing and intervening in forensic individual behaviors that may injure people, damage property, or signal impending escape attempts. Required to maintain personal safety by wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and ensuring that the PPE is in good, working condition.
