A Special Education Teacher teaches students who have disabilities, and adapts teaching methods to meet the needs of students. Assesses students and helps to develop individualized education plans that specify the services and accommodations needed for each student. Works in a classroom that includes only students with IEPs, or works with students and teachers in regular classes. For students with severe disabilities, may focus on developing skills for independent living. Works as part of a team that includes therapists, school counselors or social workers.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS
(NATURE OF WORK) In the Connecticut Technical Education and Career System this class is accountable for educating students in academic and trade coursework.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Four (4) years' experience in a high school setting (9-12 education). Trade career referral experience. Professional experience related to providing services, accommodation's, monitoring progress, and case management of students within a high school setting. Experience with varied assessments to inform instruction and promote learning. Experience with fostering and facilitating learning, classroom management, and behavior intervention plans. Experience delivering ideas and objectives through oral and written communication. Experience utilizing computer software such as Microsoft Office and Google ProductsSPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents must possess at time of appointment a valid certificate issued by the Connecticut State Board of Education in accordance with the Certification Regulations Concerning State Educator Certificates, Permits and Authorizations, with a secondary school endorsement.Benefits
