Job Description

Stratford Public Schools Certified Bilingual Teacher - Middle and High Schools Multilingual Learners Department Stratford Public Schools is seeking a certified bilingual teacher to support eligible multilingual learners at the middle and high school levels. This position will help the district provide required bilingual services, native-language support, and English language development aligned with Connecticut requirements and the academic needs of multilingual learners. Connecticut guidance identifies Transitional Bilingual Education programs as serving eligible students when there are 20 or more ELLs, the must be a certified bilingual teacher component of this program model. Position Summary The certified bilingual teacher will provide native language instructional support and bilingual services to eligible students whose families have opted into the district's bilingual program at schools where bilingual programming is mandated. The teacher will collaborate with TESOL-certified teachers, content-area teachers, counselors, administrators, and families to ensure that students have meaningful access to grade-level curriculum while developing English proficiency. This role is designed to strengthen Stratford Public Schools' capacity to meet the needs of multilingual learners through native language support, sheltered instruction, content-area collaboration, and culturally and linguistically responsive practices. Essential Responsibilities Provide bilingual instruction and native language support to eligible multilingual learners at the middle and high school levels. Support students' access to grade-level content in core academic areas through bilingual scaffolds, preview/review, vocabulary development, and language-rich instruction. Collaborate with TESOL-certified teachers to ensure students receive English language development services in addition to bilingual instruction, as appropriate. Support implementation of the Connecticut English Language Proficiency Standards and district curriculum expectations. Assist with instructional planning, progress monitoring, and documentation for eligible multilingual learners. Collaborate with general education teachers to strengthen content-area access for students receiving bilingual and/or ESOL services. Communicate with families in their preferred language, when possible, regarding student progress, program participation, and academic supports. Participate in department meetings, data team meetings, professional learning, and student support planning. Support compliance with bilingual program requirements, including the provision of native language support for students whose families opt into the mandated bilingual program. Contribute to a school culture that affirms students' home languages, cultures, identities, and academic potential. Required Certification Valid Connecticut bilingual education certification, or eligibility for appropriate Connecticut bilingual certification. TESOL certification may be considered only in accordance with Connecticut's process for requesting use of a certified ESL teacher in place of a bilingual education teacher during cases of bilingual teacher shortage. Preferred Qualifications Experience teaching multilingual learners at the middle or high school level. Strong oral and written proficiency in English and the target partner language. Knowledge of bilingual education, TESOL, sheltered instruction, and culturally responsive pedagogy. Experience collaborating with content-area teachers to support multilingual learners in academic classes. Ability to use data to monitor student progress and adjust instruction. Commitment to asset-based language practices and family partnership.
