Job Description

The Westport Day School (www.westportdayschool.org) is a private, therapeutic school (grades 6 through 12) in Fairfield County for students struggling with anxiety and depression. Mindfulness and empathy are core principles. Working conditions at WDS are excellent, class size is small (N < 8), and colleagues are highly supportive. We value supervision and professional development, providing copious amounts of both. Salary is competitive.
Job Brief:
Westport Day School is currently looking to add a skillful and enthusiastic Special Education teacher to their teaching team to teach classes and monitor a small caseload of students starting in the 2026-2027 academic year. The hours of this position are 7:45-3:00 Monday- Friday. As a Special Education Teacher, this person may need to monitor an IEP date for a caseload of a few students. As a monitor, this person will attend all related PPTs and manage goals, objectives, and updating of the current IEP. Responsibilities Develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) for students with special needs Provide instruction and support to students with emotional disabilities Utilize behavioral therapy techniques to address challenging behaviors and promote positive social skills Collaborate with other educators, parents, and support staff to create a supportive learning environment Adapt instructional materials and strategies to meet the unique needs of students Monitor student progress and adjust teaching methods as necessary Create and maintain a safe and inclusive classroom environment Develop and implement effective lesson plans that align with curriculum standards
Qualifications:
Valid teaching certification in Special Education Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with students, parents, and colleagues Strong classroom management skills to create a structured learning environment Proficient in lesson planning and curriculum development Willingness to be collaborative and flexible Ability to develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) Experience working with students with behavioral health needs or special needs preferred Ability to adapt teaching methods to meet the needs of diverse learners Patience, empathy, and a passion for working with children This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced special education teacher who is passionate about education and has a strong background in special education.
