A Special Education Teacher teaches students who have disabilities, and adapts teaching methods to meet the needs of students. Assesses students and helps to develop individualized education plans that specify the services and accommodations needed for each student. Works in a classroom that includes only students with IEPs, or works with students and teachers in regular classes. For students with severe disabilities, may focus on developing skills for independent living. Works as part of a team that includes therapists, school counselors or social workers.

Responsibilities Develop and implement comprehensive lesson plans aligned with curriculum standards and individual student needs Adapt teaching strategies to accommodate students with disabilities, including those with autism, developmental disabilities, or visual impairments Utilize educational technology tools to enhance learning experiences and engagement Manage classroom behavior effectively, employing behavior management techniques tailored for students with special needs Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to create and review Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) ensuring compliance with special education laws and regulations Conduct assessments, standardized testing, and progress monitoring to evaluate student development and inform instruction Provide mentorship, guidance, and emotional support to foster a nurturing classroom environment Incorporate speech therapy, behavioral therapy, or music therapy techniques when appropriate to support holistic student development Maintain accurate documentation of student progress, attendance, and compliance records Engage in ongoing professional development related to early childhood education, special education law, instructional design, and learning technology Experience Prior classroom experience in early childhood education or special education settings is highly preferred Demonstrated expertise in curriculum development and instructional planning for diverse learners Experience working with students with disabilities such as autism spectrum disorder, developmental delays, or visual impairments Knowledge of behavioral health strategies including applied behavior analysis (ABA) and behavior management techniques for students with special needs Familiarity with educational technology integration and assistive learning devices Experience in private school environments or early intervention programs is advantageous Strong communication skills for effective collaboration with colleagues, parents, and specialists involved in student care
