A Special Education Teacher teaches students who have disabilities, and adapts teaching methods to meet the needs of students. Assesses students and helps to develop individualized education plans that specify the services and accommodations needed for each student. Works in a classroom that includes only students with IEPs, or works with students and teachers in regular classes. For students with severe disabilities, may focus on developing skills for independent living. Works as part of a team that includes therapists, school counselors or social workers.

Definition:
Under administrative supervision, the classroom teacher for Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 8, or a combination thereof, establishes and maintains a program and environment favorable to learning and personal growth in accordance with each student's individual need and ability while instructing and engaging all students in learning activities designed to promote social, emotional, and intellectual growth. To perform the job of elementary teacher, an individual must meet the qualifications of knowledge, ability, and skill as prescribed and perform each duty and responsibility of the position with proficiency.
QUALIFICATIONS
Credentials:
Valid IL teaching license with proper endorsements
Education:
A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree including coursework to meet credential requirements
Experience:
Student Teaching, Internship, or Previous Employment in Teaching Position Occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Must be able to lift and/or move objects up to 10 pounds.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Demonstrate qualification and competency with area of assigned instruction. Effectively communicate content knowledge and applications in area of assigned instruction. Design/implement instruction in compliance with prescribed district curriculum and objectives. Utilize instructional tools and apply instructional strategy of current best practice. Communicate with parents positively, professionally, and regularly including parent teacher conferencing. Engage students in whole group instruction, small group instruction, and individual instruction. Establish/maintain standards of student conduct and control required to achieve full participation in all activities. Create/maintain an organized, uncluttered workspace with display emphasis on function and content. Engage supervisor cooperatively. Engage/interacts with colleagues respectfully. Maintain/provide records including, but not limited to the evaluation of student performance, with accuracy and according the timeline requested. Engage in professional development. Participate in school-wide supervision of students during out of classroom activity. Participate in staff meetings, district/school committees. Participate in student activities by attending, volunteering, sponsoring, or coaching. Other duties as assigned
