A Special Education Teacher teaches students who have disabilities, and adapts teaching methods to meet the needs of students. Assesses students and helps to develop individualized education plans that specify the services and accommodations needed for each student. Works in a classroom that includes only students with IEPs, or works with students and teachers in regular classes. For students with severe disabilities, may focus on developing skills for independent living. Works as part of a team that includes therapists, school counselors or social workers.

Organization Details Organization Information Our district is composed of 3 schools servicing preschool through grade twelve. Our schools are Newport Primary (Grades Pre-K-2); Newport Intermediate (Grades 3-6); and Newport High (Grades 7-12). We provide services to our students and community through the School Based Health Center, Adult Education, Family Resource/Youth Service Centers, and 21st Century Community Learning Center. Districtwide curriculum is being aligned to the new Kentucky Core Academic Standards, and the Individual needs of all students, including special needs and gifted students are addressed through intervention and enrichment. We serve a diverse population and 90% of students are considered at-risk. Early childhood services, improvement of teaching and learning, increased parent involvement, academic and behavioral response to intervention, and building district capacity for providing these services are district priorities.
